The Qashqai is a cross over and not competing directly with the likes of the Santa Fe. Most Qashqais sold here were 2wd and the only rough terrain they generally see is the footpath at the local school or supermarket.

While the Santa Fe is hardly known for it's off road ability I would imagine it would be more suited to hilly terrain than the Qashqai.

What are the other options though for a 7 Seat with off road capabilities (presuming a 4x4 Qashqai +2 can be found)?

Q7 - Huge, expensive and won't be cheap to run
Pathfinder - still expensive to run and not exactly reliable
Discovery - expensive and not exactly reliable
    X5 7 Seat - Rare and expensive
Landcruiser 7 Seat - see above

Santa Fe would be the one to go for, just make sure it's the 4x4 version as there are 4x2 models introduced for lower emissions.

And given that the santa fe is the only one of the two with 7 proper seats....

If you can find Mitsubishi Delica (which are rare in Ireland) it would top the other two choices you said OP. It's effectively a van body on a Pajero chassis. They are all Jap imports and come in 7 or 8 seat layouts with really creative seating that can be moved, turned around etc. The rear seats split & fold up to the side leaving a huge boot. Theres still a fair boot size with all the seats in place.

The delica is the 4wd version of the Spacewagon or Starwagon. The 2.8 diesel is the better option over the 2.5D but then the tax might be more than you bargained for. They are all Auto too and with your standard RWD and standard 4WD with a high and low range.

    They're pretty comfortable too.

thanks for the replies. i was looking at a 2008 santa fe 2.2 deisil 4wd in a local garage for 15500 euros and very clean with 123000 km on it. very tempted if i could knock the price down. Do about 30 miles a day on a mix of hilly side roads and secondry roads. so just abit worried on how much fuel it would take to run it.

Do you really need an off roader? Will you be doing much off roading?

The reason I ask is if you answer either none or very little then you don't need 1. A good mpv will do the job far cheaper and will be cheaper to run in general

When you say hilly side roads etc I can't say I've been on a actual road in this country that any normal car can't use perfectly well

Would the people carriers cars not suit you also ? Save your self a few quid

would an AWD car not be better suited?

Or perhaps a set of winter tyres?

Nissan do have a 1.6 daysul 4*4 +2, but it was only launched in Ireland earlier this year, so 2nd hand ones would be like hen's teeth.

Instead of santa fe or quasquai, for that money, I'd buy an xc90.

    eeh why
xc90 will be at least 2 years older will have far higher running costs
    i.e tax €1293 .10-15 mpg worse off .

You should seriously consider a regular MPV and a spare set of wheels fitted with winter tyres. It'll cost you about €600 for wheels and tyres, but if you store them in a garage they'll probably last you a good many winters and will get you sorted for any crap weather we'll get, and the savings from owning an MPV versus a SUV will save more than that per year many times over.
