Hi all, does anyone know of a shop in Ireland that sell Canon fit macro extension tubes? I know they are available on line at Amazon/Ebay etc but I can't use them sites. I have tried the shops in Limerick to no avail and so I wonder is there anywhere that sells them? Or does anyone have any secondhand/unwanted ones that they are willing to sell me? Thanks, Faing.

hey, do these cheap extension tubes work with a kit lens? I read somewhere that you can't change Aperture using these.

If your lens has no aperture ring (as is the case for most modern lenses), and the extension tubes have no electrical connections that allow the camera to communicate with the lens through the tubes, then no, you won't be able to change aperture. You'd be left with the lens wide open (depending on what that is for the lens in question). The cheap ones tend not to have electrical contacts (any reputable dealer on Ebay or wherever will mention this in the listing).

In macro shooing, one of the things you want to be able to change is aperture, as it allows it you control your depth of field. At high magnification, f2.8 or 3.5 will give you a very narrow slice of focus - often too narrow to do anything meaningful with. The ability to change aperture is much more important than auto-focus in most macro shooting.

I've got a set of Kenko extension tubes. They're really cool as they have the electrical connections which allows u to control the lens from your camera (the cheaper ones don't have these so they'll be a pain to adjust f-stop and all). Got them for around 90eur used from Conns.
They're pretty cool, but they also add a lot of weight to the lens (especially when you use all 3 of them in combination!) so I had to invest in a support bracket too to avoid damaging the lens mount on my camera...

Here's the new ones, pretty pricey but they're an awesome piece of kit for macro as they hugely magnify the image without any loss in quality as there are no lenses involved!
