we have decided to split the tech threads into different threads, as it was a bit difficult to find info in the one large thread. think needle in a haystack!

this thread is for all questions relating to CANON crop sensor dslr cameras.

Ok I think I'm in the right place. I have a Canon 550d with a kit lens and a 55-250mm lens. I mostly do portrait and glamour work. The studio I use is a bit on the small size so I'm kind of struggling to get full lenghts and glamour shots. I want to upgrade to a good quality lens with a wider focal range, say between 20 and 100mm.

I have a budget of about €800, although I could probably stretch to a grand. I'd like a good quality lens like an L lens. Any advice?

a lens in the 50mm (roughly equivalent to 85mm on full frame) range would be perfect for a crop sensor for tighter shots (shoulders and head). The f1.2 50mm is a fine piece of glass!

Other than that the f1.4 50mm prime is a decent lens (due to be replaced shortly though)

Ideally you would need something in the 28-35mm range if your in a tight area but portraits can look odd at that focal length

if you want something to cover all of that range....24-105 f/4L i think is what you are after!
or 24-70 f/2.8L if you can afford it!

Yeah I was thinking the 24-105 myself as that should allow me to get the full lenghts but also be able to do headshots. It seems like the best focal range for me although it isn't cheap. Do L lenses work ok on a crop body?

    Yes, they work perfectly.

Good, I think I'll go with the 24-105. Have any of you guys ever used Harvey Norman's flexirent service or know anywhere else you can rent lenses? I'd like to try before I buy.

Where about are you? I know Berminghams and Conns in Dublin do rentals.

I'm in Kildare myself. I could try Harvey Norman first I suppose. See what they can offer me.
