Whoa, I have to say that image of the EPG interface looks really good on this box.

Has anyone seen or bought this box yet? If you looked in a retailer; how much is a good price to buy it?

If anyone has it at home; is both the hardware and software reliable?

Can anyone tell me, what is a common interface (CI) slot and what is it used for?

It could be used for a CAM (Conditional Access Module) and subscriber card if a pay DTT service is ever launched in this country.

Are these boxes ever used on the UK market at all?

    Already discussed here.

The lack of an LNB Out is welcomed as it must be one of the least used things on a satellite box.

The box itself is the same old Vestel Chassis. I am not a fan as design goes.

Here's a question for The Cush. How did this pass certification given that CI+ is mandatory according to Nordig 2.1 onwards from 2012.

Optional and recommended but not mandatory for Saorview because it's a FTA service. It was mandatory for the Boxer DTT spec receivers.
    3. CA System and interfaces for the DTT Network

Support for embedded Conditional Access and DVB Common Scrambling Algorithm (CSA) filtering and descrambling is optional for the free-to-air (FTA) IRD.

However, the support for DVB Common Interface Plus is recommended for the IRD and for iDTV with a display screen diagonal smaller than 30cm. Support for DVB Common Interface Plus is mandatory for iDTV with display screen of greater than 30cm diagonal. This requirement is in adherence with the appropriate EU directives on the subject.

Common Interface Plus extension refers to the “CI plus Specification, Content Security Extensions to the Common Interface” version 1.2 or later. The IRD shall support the download of new CA system software to the CA Module via DVB SSU.

Implementation should conform to the specification set out in Section 3 of Teracom Additions and Clarifications Document available and at www.boxer.se

It is mandatory for Nordig IRD boxes using DVB-T from 2.1 from manufactured and distributed from 2012 onwards according to Terracom. It was mandatory from day one on DVB-T2 boxes.

So RTE have added a clarification to Nordig requirements.... there really was no reason that they should have clarified this. Fine its FTA, but CI+ has now being accepted as a module that satisfies Sky's security issues with NDS. CI Plus modules are now available for NDS. Kabel Deutschland and Teleclub Switzerland are among those using NDS and Ci Plus cams. Which would have been handy for combo boxes that have Ci+ as mandatory .

This would have been of particular interest btw to those in overspill areas as it is also approved and used by TopupTV on the Freeview platform for Sky Sports 1+2 and ESPN.

Some may not know it but there are TVs that are actually be CI+ compliant. A handy Checker

I was in in DID Swords this afternoon and the assistant in there told me that they were going to get 4life combo boxes on tuesday but he didn't know anything more than that.
I then went into Currys and in a big basket labelled "get ready for the Saorview" were 4life combo boxes for 99 euro. However on inspection there was no mention on saorview, a fact later confirmed by an assistant. So buyer beware!

CI+ also has the advantage that to get CI+ certification you must implement MHEG5. It's likely all EU TVs above about 40cm / 16" will have CI+ eventually.
