SCART FREEVIEW, DIGITAL TV RECEIVER RECORDER TUNER SET TOP BOX, USB MEMORY RECORDER, SD CARD READER, HINGED for LCD TVs by Digi-fun®

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/FREEVIEW-DIGITAL-RECEIVER-RECORDER-Digi-fun%C2%AE/dp/B003YT5XLU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348603392&sr=8-1

Would I have been lucky enough to find a possible solution to a relative's problem with 5 crt analogue TV's that will be useless after Oct 24th?

I know its not Saorview approved and will not be guaranteed to pick up any of the newer features of digital, but, really all he needs, is for the tellys to do what they do now, show the basic 4 Irish channels.

If he can get out of it for ~ €25 a telly, he'll be delighted. Ariel seems fine, picks up digital TV on the Saorview approved telly in the sitting room.

NO - Saorview uses MPEG-4 compression - Freeview is MPEG-2 only.

If you are not an expert - don't try to be smart - take the 'plain vanilla' road - e.g. bye one Saorview box (or if NI channels are available a FreeviewHD box) for each TV set.

Many old TV sets are not worth saving. New Saorview/FreeviewHD TV sets are no longer expensive and often use much less power.

A FreeviewHD box can be as low as £30 in the UK.

    Lars :)

Thank you for that. The manual says it is mpeg 4 "supports mpeg4 playback" or but no mention of Saorview as it is a UK product.

One Saorview box is too expensive! They have already bought a new TV for the sitting room. (€210).

Atleast I didnt give them false hope!

Something like this will do the basic job of decoding the Saorview channels.

Try searching for "mpeg4 hd scart" or similar & you might find more of them. I wouldn't personally spend anything on a receiver that could only get the Irish channels (apart from a new tv, which would soon be augmented by a satellite receiver).

This most likely refers to computer video files such as DivX or MP4.
