Becoming an electrician without apprenticeship

Ive a mate here interested in becoming an electrician with the aim of going to canada to do such , hes well versed on the basics and id say could probably get away with wiring a house without setting it on fire :pac:, is there any way to just take some sort of electricians test or 1 month course or similar and not go through the 4 (i think) years of apprenticeship for it ?

I very much doubt it. I'd nearly be certain you couldn't.

Notwithstanding any technical training issues, the clout that the TEEU (Electricians union) yield would have any such course ran out of town within a matter of hours!

No cant be done, there are short courses available in the uk but if he is going to canada he would need to have proof of a proper qualification (which he wouldnt have) and 4 years experience at least.

If your mate wants to call himself an electrician, that's fine. But he has to have proof, he's one. To get that proof, he has to undergo an apprenticeship. That takes time and dedication. Unless he does that, then no-one in the world will want to give him work.

Why does your mate not want to do the apprenticeship? And what makes him think that a short course can provide what years of study and experience cannot?
