Looking for small engined petrol car, sub €1k that can better 34mpg on a long run. I was considering a 1.4 civic, 1.3 colt or starlet - anyone have any idea for fuel consumption figures for these?

    Or any alternatives?

I've considered diesels but anything I'll be looking at will have intergallactic mileage, I want to minimise the chance of having to replace components!!

    Suggested so far:
    Skoda Fabia

Both a Civic and a Colt will have loaded insurance premiums due to their reputation.

Skoda Fabias are more or less cheaper VW Polos. Fairly reliable, cheap in every meaning of the word and quite economical too.

1.3 XLi Corolla from 1993 - 1997. Should get one for peanuts. I got mine for free!

When I was tracking my fuel consumption it appeared to be in the high 30s for my corolla.

My 00 Peugeot 206 is still going strong. I've had it 6 years and nothing's gone wrong with it, just the usual wear and tear stuff like tyres, brake pads, etc.. had to be replaced.

Spend less than 30 quid a week on fuel but I only do city driving

Colts are a bit heavy on petrol compared to the likes of a starlet.

I really think you shouldn't look beyond a Starlet.

I have a 2002 Skoda Octavia 1.4 i need to fix up for selling, will be looking for 900-1000 for it, so it's a good indication of what they should go for 120,000 miles/40mpg, i would imagine fabia would be even better

    Small car?

Im rocking the glanza for my college runabout! Regular mixed driving is returning 35-40mpg, that said, mine is totally unmodified and if you drive it any way hard those figures drop like mad. But i do 350kms per week for €40

It probably wont interest you but if you want something with a bit of go in it and isn't as bland as a colt or fiesta. insurance is fine on it too, toyota reliability yada yada.

edit : everyones forst impression of you is that you are a cock.

I'd go along with the 90s Corolla suggestions. 40 mpg is easily attainable even if you're not too careful. The 4E-FE engine (pre-VVTi) has got to be one of the most indestructible engines ever made.

Managed to do the head gasket in , on a 96 starlet with over 200000 miles on clock. Family car ie my mams. Two siblings learned to drive in it... Which explains why gearbox went at about 180k .... Great car though..

When did poor students need cars ..??

my son claims to get 45mpg from his 1.25 fiesta and I don't suppose he's h4e slowest driver in the world!

You would get a good 2000/1 model for about a grand. (See my adverts.ie ad for my 2003 for sale! :-) )

Mazda demio? If a starlet fits the bill then a demio should too.
    Cheap and basic.

When they're relying on a bus service that can only bring them to college 3 out of the 5 days in a college week.

Thanks for the consumption figures, I'm probably gonna end up with something with a toyota badge on it!

The most fuel efficient petrol cars courtesy of spritmonitor. I've bolded the cars that you can realistically get in this country that would be in your price range. If it was my choice, I would go with the 1.0 Yaris. It's reliable, there are lots of models to choose from, and if you don't rag it, you can get 45-50 mpg.

I had one and it used to do 35-39 mpg from a few brim tests.
