How safe is the arts block/library?

    Hey,
I was just wondering is it safe enough in the arts block reading room and in the library to leave your laptop and bag there while you go and collect something from the printer, or maybe get a coffee?

If your only going to be gone for a minute its a lot of hassle to pack everything up just to go the printer outside the door? Or just downstairs in the case of the library?

I've left my bag and laptop out in both the reading room and library for more than an hour even (not when it's busy though in case anyone gives out ;)) loads of times and nothing's ever been taken/damaged. I'm sure it happens though, so it might be better to be careful.

They're safe enough. I'd be a bit cagey about the Arts Block when it's crowded, but security is usually around then though.

There have been a few incidents of theft in the Library over the last while. Haven't heard anything about the reading room.

Just make sure you save all your work before you leave your laptop though

Friend of mine had her netbook stolen from the reading room a few months back. Unless a friend is watching it or you can see it from where you're standing I wouldn't suggest leaving it, little bit of hassle or a potential few hundred lost.

If you're only leaving to get a coffee or go to the toilet I'd say you're grand, but I wouldn't chance leaving it any longer than that. The signs from last year about things being stolen from the library are still up

I'd recommend bringing all small valuables with you - phone, MP3, wallet, etc. - so that, worst case scenario, the only things they could take are either easily replaced, or bigger things like laptops that would be riskier to try and get away with

I definitely wouldn't chance it. You could always just ask the person next to you to keep an eye on it while you go to the printer and take your phone with you. That's what I usually do and nobody ever minds.

I thought those signs were up more to put a stop to the inconsiderate sh*ts who leave their laptop plugged in while they go and get lunch rather than stuff actually getting robbed.

I was hoping they would put up 'Mobile phone chargers will self destruct if you attempt to use them in these sockets' once things start to get busy over the next few weeks in there.

I have a tendency to just leave it but it's risky. Think a good few laptops were stolen in one day during the last summer exams.

I think there might be hint of killing two birds there two in that with people not leaving their stuff it cuts out the people that would leave a computer of table and just doss around for an hour or so taking up sorely neaded spaces.

If you're only gone for a minute then I think you'd be grand, and I also think that the people who'd be after your bag would be scoping you out before hand and if they were smart wouldn't risk it if you'd only just left your desk, i mean how would they know where you were going? you could be back any second for all they know.

I must say though, the thing I hate is when I come in to the library or the reading room to do some work, some Douchebag has pissed off for an hour or 2 leaving all their **** there taking up space with no space left. I like to think that the douches **** getting stolen is a form of poetic justice for inconveniencing those around them.
