    Help !
Looking to buy a 2004-2005 diesel estate car with max. engine size 2.0. (Budget approx. €5500) I'm interested in both a 2005 Toyota Avensis estate and 2005 Volkwagen Passat Estate . Which of these cars would your vote go to and why ?

Tough one. Id be wary of early new model passat, also wouldn't be a fan of the 5 speed avensis diesel either.

    Is the passat new model

    Passat then

Better spec, simpler engine, avensis 116hp is a wee bit troublesome and doesn't wear miles well.

A Mondeo estate is worth looking at too, bigger than the Passat or Avensis and cheaper to buy.

toyota avensis estate is better compare to two. I bought a mondeo estate for a cheaper price but not really satisfied so I have to trade in for a toyota avensis estate 2005 , very very satisfied. passat is also good but for the leg space at the back passenger is quiet tight compare to avensis. For the engine performance I think Toyota will still reach maximum mileage before it break down. I hope this help

I used to have an 04 Passat and it broke my wallet. The 6-speed box went along with all the usual passat issues (cv joints, window regulators and alternator(s)).
I found the ride unconfortable and the roadholding poor with the car being nose heavy.
The buddy had and a similar year Avensis at the time, albeit a petrol saloon one, which I cannot really compare to your eastate ver, there was simply no comparison between the two cars (road holding and comfort wise).
The Avensis is weaker and power delivery is less than impressive at times but I know which one I would live with....
    Avensis all the way.
Colm has mentioned reliability issues and I assume that has to do with the gear box in the Avensis? Not sure but I did hear of gearbox issues with older models alright.
