My woman drove through what she says was a very slight pool of water on the road today and she tells me she crawled through it cause she knows theirs a pot hole on that part of the road and didn't wanna drive into it, she drives a golf, about 200 yards down the road she notices the exhaust warning light on in the rev counter, is it possible it's that the water on the road is the cause of this...? Car is fine as far as driving wise goes

Diesel/petrol, does the sensor look like an exhaust or an engine if its the latter it could be one of hundreds of issues.

Are you sure the manual doesn't say its an emission fault light?

Its not an exhaust light anyway, its an engine malfunction light. She may have got water into something in the engines electrical system. Having the fault diagnosed is the first step.

The exact term for it in the manual is exhaust gas warming lamp and its says its to do with the cat and an oxygen sensor...

Strange. Its very misleading to people the way these things are written in the manuals IMO. That light can indicate a fault with any of the engines electronic control systems. Most engine faults will cause the oxygen sensor to read out of range and so throw the light.

Having said that, driving through high water can cause the catalytic converter to fail due to the cold water hitting the hot(500 degrees +) cat.

    Lost in translation.
German built car, and the manual is probably translated by a native german speaker.
Exhaust = emissions I would say. Any fault that will effect emmissions will bring on the light. Get the fault read, preferably by someone with vcds, vag com. hth Jim

The O2 sensor on the exhaust was probably damaged.

yes, we lazily call the exhaust PIPE the exhaust but the exhaust is actually the emissions isn't it.
