Hi, sorry im going to be new to this but ill try my best.

Im 19 and im in the same bucket as most 18/19 year olds and want a lovely nice car for the cheapest price I can possibly get along with tax, insurance and the price of the car.

The car ive been researching (excuse me for this im a bit into my cars) is a 1981 fiat 126. It is a fantastic lovely little run around, cheap tax and cheap (enoughish!).

The only problem I have is Vintage car insurance because of the car being over 25 years old I cannot go to normal insurance companies.

    My question is,
Is there any young drivers out there who have gone down the vintage car route for their first car? was it a good idea? How much is it really?

Thanks for your time and hopefully I havent put it into the wrong section. (If I have I will delete this post and repost in that particular section)

now you are here, read the sticky at the top. All the info you need is there (I think you will find you will have little luck doing what you want to do, you aren't the first to ask)

I used to have a standard motor policy on a 33 year old car with AXA. I think it'll be them and maybe Aviva that don't have an upper age limit on the vehicle (although some schemes, such as a policy underwritten by them, but arrange by a broker can have different terms along with an upper age limit)

Cost will be similar to other standard motor policies, so don't expect cheap.

thats the exact point. There is no way you can get CHEAP insurance. The Companies are wise to young fellers trying to get Classic Insurance so it will cost the same whether it's a ten yr old car or a 40 yr old one. The OP will however get to avail of cheap tax, and if he went for a slightly older car, it would be NCT exemp, so there is a benefit to going down the classic route, more fun too.(and they are easier to work on)

My first car was a classic, the insurance wasn't cheap though - it was £1,600 with a hefty excess.

Unfortunately you just have to suck it up and pay the high premiums until you build an NCB, regardless of what car it is.

And you'll be wanting cheap petrol to go with this? :D

As has been said, either suck it up, or forget about it. I'll add a third way: emigrate.

Went to insure my vintage Land Rover today, Wouldn't quote me as i had a claim for €4k two years ago on my car policy. Clean record for twenty plus years before that. Well that's life. The old girl may sit for another while.
