    Hi All,

    I'm to look at a 2007 2ltr A4 tdi sline, 156k miles with service history to 135k,

there are alot of horror stories regarding the 2litre with engine failure etc but did they sort out the faults by 2007 and is the 170bhp a better more reliable machine than the 140bhp.

170s are even less reliable, and that's some achievement.

The CR models are fine in both power outputs but they didn't come along until the newer model came along. Personal opinion but I simply cannot see why people pay such mental money for a less spacious Passat and is still wrong wheel drive. A BMW 3 series or a Merc C-class would be my choices depending on ones priorities if I wanted a posh small executive saloon. I would also add in the Lexus IS250 if you were willing to consider petrol.

yes big miles its a UK company car with all motorway Miles,

Just i heard that the engine problems has been sorted out by late 2006 but seems not the case then so the 2litre are still rubbish then but a great looking car.

The injectors are covered under a recall these days but would a car with 156k miles be elegable or have they already been replaced? Oil pump is another known issue but apparently there is a proactive fix for that.

It would want to be going very cheap to take a punt on it as there could be some very large bills around the corner.

I agree... when I was buying my 06 Passat it was it or an equivalent 06 A4

The A4 was much smaller inside and felt like my old 02 Passat insofar as dash layout etc

Personally I wouldn't even consider an A4 - especially not if you plan to be carrying more than yourself in it. An equivalent A6 though is starting to come down nicely I've noticed lately....

I heard that in the 05 passat and audi the balancer shaft was weak and give way and thus busted the engine, not sure if this was sorted on this later model

Its not and wasnt sorted until late 08. Even the early model of the current A4 suffers the balance shaft problem. I have a CR Passat and it has the same problem.

Who what where now? Don't tell me that's something else I've to watch for (as the miles keep adding up) :(

I thought you knew about that. Yours should be done at this stage, its not a big job in fairness but schedule it around a oil change as the sump must come down..

The balance shaft issue is fairly straight forward to resolve and should be done on a pro active basis, its fairly cheap also.

    156,000 miles!

Surely this is decent mileage for a diesel engine, like there capable of another 200,000 if not 250,000 on top of whats on it already?

How did you get on with this 06 passat after? I am buying one tomorrow

    OP, just dont

My brother in law imported a lovely 07 A4 170 with 80k miles in metallic blue with all the toys and it was gone by year end. I dont know whether it was the UK spec but there was problems with the suspension, brakes, bearings, wheels and multiple engine management and MAF sensor issues. And that was with a respectable service history

Save yourself the heartache. Get a cared for 320d 170 Touring or something else, anything else!

Not these days! Plus suspension components need replacing and other stuff needs to be done which is all expensive.
