Looking at buying a 06 Focus from a used car dealer. They are offering a 3 month engine + gearbox warranty. NCT'd until Feb 2014. Would this be fairly standard or should the warranty cover more?

Fairly standard. I think its the minimum they have to offer.

Find a different used car dealer, or get the car up on a ramp and checked out thoroughly by a mechanic. I'd be expecting a full 3 month warranty on an 6 year old car. All he's telling you with that guarantee is that you probably don't have head gasket issues and the gearbox isn't full of sawdust.

A friend of mine bought a 318ci under such a warranty 2 years ago. Within a short space of time he'd put a grand into the car replacing suspension components amongst other items.

Now, the car is perfect since, and he bought it at the cheaper end of what was available, so all in all he's about square - what he thought he'd saved, he paid out afterwards.

My point is more that you should ask "why is this car cheaper? Why won't he guarantee basic components for 3 months? What will my bills be when I get it?" and if you're not qualified to ascertain precisely that, then you need a mechanic to tell you all the info.

Getting an 8 year old luxury petrol saloon for nothing because people are afraid of a petrol and motor tax is a bargain. Something more desirable, sitting in a 'garage' (yard with a portacabin) for 1,000 euro less than the rest of the market and sod all warranty, is probably not. Sometimes these guys give smaller trade-ins too under the proviso "We keep our prices lower, but that means our trade-in offers are lower too".

3 months is not much imo, I would expect at least 6 months on a car of that age. A Nissan or Toyota dealer would give you a 12 month used car warranty if selling a similar car.
