Is Macreddin still operating as a golf club. I knew a couple of members who got shafted down there I was almost one of them.

Shame because it was a nice course. Haven't been down in a long time but last time I was there I just walked on and played with a member who was shafted.

    How were they shafted?

I've just checked their website and they're advertising membership at €800 and taking bookings for rounds online. A quick check shows next Saturday morning almost fully booked and Sunday also. Plenty of midweek slots available though.

I'm asking because I was thinking of joining there in the new year, it's not that far a drive and the membership sub looks very reasonable.

paid €6000 membership then when things went tits up they lost all privileges and the club lost its GUI affiliation aswell.

Their memberships are worth sweet fa now.

I wouldn't pay to much attention to what you read online regarding membership in any club these days.

WOW so you mean to tell me we have a differing idea on the meaning of shafted

Well that's truly inspiring stuff there. Keep up the good work

Not putting words in GreeBo's mouth, but there are many similar tales all over the country, especially with golf clubs that started during the septic kitten era.

Hardly surprising that they've all cut their cloth to suit their measure. Macreddin is in receivership, so it's a completely new ball game if you'll excuse the pun.

Excellent value now though and green fees are very good as well at €25 for a weekday visitor. Might take a trip there some day if the weather improves and time allows.

Ah, so you indeed dont have a point, good to know.

Person buys shares in a club.
    Club gets in financial trouble.
    Persons money is now gone.

Hmm an investment goes bad....who'd have thunk it!

So who shafted these members? The world economy? Ze Germans?
Or are you just looking to bitch and moan?

For the prices you're quoting there it's very reasonable and a great course it's been a while since i played it though.

I'd be wary handing over a full years membership though see if you can pay by direct debit you never know when they'll cease operating as a golf club.

    Are they GUI affiliated again?

If you're not bothered about the above and looking for a good club at a cheap price looks like this is the one for you.

If I'm not mistaken you're a moderator perhaps read your charter regarding attacking the poster.

    I've reported your comments.

I have nothing to bitch and moan about as you put it smart arse.

Did I say I lost anything or that I was shafted perhaps you should retract your previous comment.

Good stuff I'd go for it if you have the pennies spare. It's a good challenging course. That par 3 up on the hill is a great hole. Used to catch me out all the time:D

oh to be a student. that's for nothing.

I sincerely hope, for your sake, that you are not backseat moderating?

Did i say that you said you lost anything? What exactly are you looking for me to retract? You however might think about retracting "smart arse" before someone reports you to a moderator.

    @rrpc
Looks like a legit deal so!

Your comment about me bitching and moaning.. utter nonsense perhaps a bit of back seat moderating is required you clearly aren't very good at it.

I've nothing further to discuss with you I've reported your comments.#

If you could maybe add something of use to the thread and perhaps stop the bitching and moaning.

Look forward to your little infraction message perhaps a ban oh the joy.

Good luck with the club OP sorry for this idiot stirring up a fuss.

Yeah, hopefully in the new year if time and finances allow.

Been meaning to take a spin down and try it out, but weather and time haven't coincided yet :)

    So, in summary:
    1) You have nothing to back up your claim of "shafting of members".
    2) You have reported my post to me (twice it seems).
    3) You seem to be confused by your own posts as I have neither bitched nor moaned in this thread.
    4) You require an infraction or ban.
    5) You have called me an idiot.

You'll probably be waiting a while on the weather. I hear summers on a Fri next year might be worth booking that day off :D

Macreddin is one of the nicest golf courses around... I think that the golf course has been bought out and is not in receivership like the hotel. They have put a bit of money into it over the last few months finishing off the cart paths and there is changing/shower facilities now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 318 ✭✭Unglika Norse

I understood that Mr G had bought the club back off of the receiver put that it has gone back into receivership again, also that fact that the Irish Turfcare group have applied for an examiner to be appointed might have a bearing on the outcome of macreddan

Funnily enough, for the layout and views and interesting holes I would score it quite highly. The way the course is laid out on the first nine with holes generally running along the side of the slopes reminds me of the Ring of Kerry without the sea views, and the cutting out of the course from the woodland has made it seem very mature even though it is still quite new. (There are a few duff holes there as well ) We walked the course with electric trolleys and I have to say that although I felt fairly fit at the time the constant climbs and drops and the walking on loose gravel roads/paths trying to control the trolley especially on the early part of the back nine knackered me completely. Our view after finishing on the day was that we enjoyed the course but would never want to walk it again.

A bloody fine golf course. I played it hungover after a wedding in brooklodge and an hours sleep. Worst call of my life was not getting a buggy that morning. Wouldn't walk it again sober! Smashing course. Would consider it if the drive wasn't hefty for me!

Anybody played Macreddin recently? Due to play it in 3 weeks time as part of a weekend away. Any feedback would be great?

Played there for the first time in Jan.
Course was in good shape and I loved it out there.

We didn't opt for buggies but I did sleep like a log as soon as I got home. If I was heading out to the pub, meal etc after the round I'd probably opt for a buggy to conserve some energy for the business end of things.

They've a hole by hole flyover here as a taster
    http://www.macreddingolfclub.com/course/hole04.asp

The Par 3, 4th hole is one of the best Par 3's I've played.

    Forgot to mention.

We were slightly delayed due to frost, it's up in the hills and fairly sheltered up there so I think it's fair to say it more susceptible to frost than most.
I know it shouldn't be a concern in April, but if this weather continues.......

We started a bit later than planned and on the 10th as the back 9 is more open.

i think this is a great course, some really interesting holes and beautiful setting overall.

Would love to see it getting the attention and recognition it deserves.

Presume the club itself is on its knees, but sure such is life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 402 ✭✭The_Architect

There is a lot of love for Macreddin but I found it very disappointing.

I won't go in to what I didn't like because I could pick holes in even the best courses if I was being uncharitable.

There's no denying the beauty of the location, however.

OK guys - playing Macreddin next month with 3 friends who are all good players.

I'm thinking that coming into the summer the place should be firm under foot and with some fine weather (touch wood) we're not planning to go for buggies.

Would this be advisable based upon your experiences ? Don't want to kill ourselves out there, but surely it couldn't be that long.

Not really a question of length - more to do with:

    a. a couple of climbs (the 15th will knock the stuffing out of you), and
    b. the walks from 9 to 10, and 18 to clubhouse

I played it without a buggy the first time and have used a buggy ever since!
