    Hey,

I'm sure this has been asked a million tines but an wondering if anyone has done through the inns and knows when is the best time to start contacting masters?? I essentially have zilch legal experience bar my academics and am starting kings inns fulltime next week. Am I better to wait until the course starts, do I seem over eager contacting them a few days before hand with no idea what to expect from the next few years?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Skittles - It is never too early to look for a Master, the amounts coming out of the Inns at present mean that Masters can get snapped up pretty quickly. But there is nothing wrong with approaching a master now even though you dont intend to go down for a year or two.

Ask around if you can and find a master that has a practice relevant to your interests and is a good master i.e. gives you experience and exposure.

Get your master IMMEDIATELY. Dont wait another day. The master list thats up now is for this years devils but accordingly, anyone on the list will also need a devil next year.

Even at this stage, half the masters you ring will probably be taken.

Your right there. Contacted 7 today, in the area I want. 3emails back saying no. Already! One saying they weren't even taking a devil. But they were on the list!!

Dont give up, keep going at it this week and dont stop until you get one. The longer you leave it, the harder it gets!

some masters do not want to take devils too far in advance.i know from anecdotal evidence that some people who were rung before the future devil was in KI (ie while they were still in undergrad) told them to ring back when they were in the inns. others have a full list of devils for 2/3 years in advance.

the latest you could leave it, realistically, is xmas of Kings Inns year (i struggled and finally managed one in february of KI year). However, if you want a master in a specific area where there are less practitioners they obviously go faster, so you should start early. also, if you want to go on circuit down the country, there is obviously a smaller field

the list of the inns website is not always updated regularly so it may be worth contacting people who are listed as taken, as their plans may have changed. equally, peoples entry on the law library website listing their areas of practice is not always accurate, so you should always double check they are in the area you want. the normal method is that if someone wants to take you on, they'll invite you for a coffee and have a chat about your ambitions and what you want to do in practice. you could very well end up going on two or three of these as you find that they may not suit what you want to accomplish at the bar.

if you are in extreme difficulty finding a master, contact KI or the bar council and they will help. one of the best resources are the tutors in KI. most of them (or at least the ones who were tutoring when i was there) are in practice and will know a lot of people who are looking for masters and will be able to give you a hand and are always happy to help
