New Car - Ford Mondeo Titanium???

    Hi all,
I am thinking of getting a new car the beginning of next year. I took a Mondeo Titanium 160bhp for a test drive and was very impressed. The car felt very solid on the road and had plenty of power. Lots of nice toys too! I would like to order the 140bhp Titanium model. I dont think the extra hp on the 160 is worth the money. The individual interior styling pack (full leather heated electric memory seats, and a few more bits of leather scattered in the cabin) would be nice but I have no idea how much extra it would cost. I know there is a new model coming out but it will be late 2013 before that gets here. Anyone have feedback or info on these cars? How well do they hold their value? Any other extras worth having? Thanks

    I've never test-driven a new car.

Not aimed at you, OP, but is that how they get people? You test a nippy a well specced car before you look at the price list, shriek, and buy the boggo spec? Then, because you don't like it quite as much as what you initially drove, you get bored after 3 or 4 years and repeat the process?

Personally I think that if you're set on a new Mondeo OP then you'd be better off waiting for the new model or your "new" car will be "old" before it's 12 months out of the dealer.

Of course, against that you have the possibility that a new model will have various problems that'll take them a year or two to iron out (which potentially means trips back to the dealer for you), vs buying the last of the current model where those issues have mostly/all been worked out.

With regards holding value, I've read here they do well but there's a lot of them around too so potentially lots to choose from in the 2nd hand market. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me on this marque will be along shortly though :)

I'm not trying to rain on your parade btw, just if it was me and I was buying a new car with a new model about to come out, I'd be inclined to wait (I still feel sorry for all those E60 520D 10-reg driver who just couldn't wait those extra few months for the F10)

Oh on the "plus" side, you will probably get one of those crazy new reg plates (if that idea does go through).

I fail to see the relevance of this post to the OP, especially as a 2 litre 140 Mondeo is hardly the boggo spec of that model of car. It's a Mondeo, there's no shortage of models in the sepc the OP is looking at.

OP, I wouldn't buy a current shape Mondeo new without a significant discount. They lose money pretty fast and the new model will only compound that as it is due in the not too distant future. If anything I would almost wait until then to buy.

Current model isn't fantastic at holding its value and with a new model on the way that will only get worse.

In saying that, it's still the best handling car in its class, and Titanium is nice spec to have. If you can get the car at a good price the go for it.

Have you compared it to a Superb?
For the same money as the 140 mondeo you would probably get a much higher spec Superb.
    Just a thought

The Superb would be slightly more expensive and it would need to be ordered from factory I'd say.

    Nice car too though

IF I get a very good deal on the mondeo, I will probably order one. I have a skoda octavia elegance at the moment. Great car but the mondeo feels much better to drive and the cabin is a lot nicer that the current skoda models imo. I dont think there is much of a price difference either. I will ask the dealer what the trade in value of the mondeo will be in 3 years and may switch to the new model then.

That's why I specifically said "Not aimed at you, OP". It was a segue. A bit early in the thread for a tangent, I'll admit.

    On topic:
OP, as a personal choice, I'd buy a one year old version of the car I wanted with the spec I wanted instead. I'd take toys and power over a 00000 odometer, for my money, every time.

Titanium spec Mondeos cost crazy money when new but depreciate heavily especially with the new model on the horizon, have you considered a used 2012 model that will already have taken a fair share wack in depreciation?

I'd also consider the Kia Optima Platinum, not as nice to drive as the Mondeo but better looking, fresher design and better equipped and also has a 7 year warranty. The 1.7 litre diesel engine has 138bhp too.

Or look at the Mazda 6, there are some great deals on existing models at the moment in order to make way for the new model. The 6 drives just as good as the Mondeo but doesn't feel as bulky.

That Kia is a nice looking car! Will go for a test drive in one. They seem reasonably priced for the amount of kit that comes with them.

Link below to the mondeo that I looked at. It seems like a lot of money for a car coming up on 2 years old! I dont think that model can be bought new in Ireland. Is it worth it?

All cars of that size depreciate heavily, Mondeo included.

p.s. OP that car you've linked to looks like a UK import. Mph speedo is a giveaway. Top spec. having said that.

That Kia looks fantastic, nice spot!

Titanium X Sport is a UK only model as they would have cost silly money here. Always thought they only sold the Titanium X Sport with the 2.2 TDCi engine but I guess they but the 2.0 TDCi in the facelifted model.

In comparision not too far from you there is a 2.2 TDCi Titanium Sport which appears to have every optional extra fitted, mad money though:

I pass by that car every day. Beautiful car but too much for a second hand. I wonder is it possible to change the 19inch wheels to 17inch for the car that I linked to. The 19inch wheels wouldn't last long on the roads I travel!

I'm sure second hand alloy wheels pop up all the time on the likes of donedeal or a Ford owner's forum especially in the UK. The dealer might be able to accomodate you also given they are main Ford dealers.

If I was to trade in my own car against the mondeo for €27,950, what sort of deal should I expect? My own car is a 08 Skoda Octavia Elegance. I bought it new and I had about €3,000 worth of extras added to the standard Elegance spec, park sensors, maxidot, spoiler, auto lights and wipers, tyre pressure monitor and a few more things I cant think of right now. Is my car worth €13,000 to €14,000 in a trade in?

No idea what you would get for it but you can wipe out the extras straight away. They don't add any monetory value second hand, they just make it easier for a dealer to sell on.

Just to give you an idea, here is a 2008 Elegance asking €12500 and that is from a Skoda dealer. Given that they will probably sell it for less to someone paying cash you can bet they bought it in as a trade-in at close to €10k or €10.5k.

Thanks for all the advice. I will inquire about that mondeo and take an optima for a spin. I will update the thread and let ye know which way I go. Thanks again

Having driven both, I'd take the Mondeo. The Optima looks fantastic, has a great standard specification and the engine is a peach, but the seats let it down.

The Mondeo on the other hand has great seats, all the spec you need (full leather would be nice, but the half leather/alcantara is pretty good anyway). Ford had additional discount off for Mondeo's delivered in quater 3. Haven't heard anything for quater 4 or 2013 yet, but I'd say there will either be bigger discounts or extra spec coming for the Mondeo's final year - along with the 3/3/3 deal.

Insignia is also worth a look, especially in Elite spec. Don't let the high retail prices put you off, a very good discount could be negotiated.

Just a quick update. I bought the Mondeo Titanium X Sport that I linked to. Link seems to be removed now though. Car is really nice to drive. Surprising how little body roll there is around turns. Feels like a very big car compared to the Octavia. The 19inch wheels are not nearly as rough on the road as I was expecting. The power is a big step up from the octavia too! The xenon headlights provide excellent light. Very happy with my purchase. Thanks for all the info

Hi, bumping thread but I am looking at one of these now. Are you still happy with it?
