Gift of €6000 or 2010 Vauxhall Astra?

Bit of expert advice please! :)

The other half's father was going to gift him STG£5,000 (converted to €6,272 on xe.com) At the same time, his father was also looking to trade up his 2010 Vauxhall Astra, 1.7 CDTI, diesel. It has a host of additional extras also. When he enquired about the trade-in, the garage told him they would offer him STG£6,500 (€8,155).

So his dad has offered him the car instead of the cash. As we live in Ireland, we would have to pay VRT and whatever else required. Also, as Vauxhalls aren't as desireable as Opels, would it have a decent resale value here? The OH plans on keeping it for quite a few years though, so that's probably not much of a consideration. He currently drives a 2003 Astra, so would get a couple €K if he was to sell it.

So what do you think guys, should we take the car or the cash?

£5000 is more like €6250 I would have thought?

Well you've mucked up the conversion... £5000 = €6,272.40 according to xe.com, so that's something to take into consideration.

Yep, @€;6272 at todays mid market rate.
And 2009 Diesel Vauxhall Astra's are in and about €10500 see here Your car is a year up so maybe @€;1200 more in value?
So I'd take the car vrt it and still make a few quid!

Do you require a car OP? Will you use this vehicle?
Sorry just saw you will keep it. Why say no to a free car and the current motor might not shift much less than what your father in law is offering.

Yes, if we accept the car, we will keep it.

Have you worked out how much the VRT will be? If it's reasonable and it should be it seems like a no brainer. Sell your existing car, pay vrt and come up 7 years with maybe even a small bit of cash left over. Nice predicament though!

It's impossible to advise you without knowing:

    1. The value of the car registered here.

    2. The cost of bringing it over and registering it.

If €6250 + VRT and import costs is less than what the car would fetch for a quick sale here than take the car, otherwise take the cash.

Old shape or new shape astra (changed in 10) ?

If it's new shape, defo take the car if you can afford the VRT. Depending on the mileage, it sounds cheap at 6500 stg.

It's the new shape. He might even have got it early in 2011. Mileage isn't too bad - around 20k.

If you want a new car and this one suits your needs, sounds like a nice deal!
