    I was wondering who pays these people
    In Ireland is it the goverment or Vatican or donations ?

    generally speaking, their orders pay their living expenses, afaik. the government certainly do not.
    i don't know who pays for chaplains in prisons and the army, though.

    You don't get paid to be a priest or a nun or a monk. You get paid to do a job, and for that reason most priests, nuns etc are employed.

    If they're employed in a public sector job, they get paid like anyone else, at the public expense.

    If they're employed by a church organisation, they get paid by that organisation. Parish clergy, for example, are paid by the diocese. The church organisation probably raises its funds from endowments and donations.

    If they are retired, or sick, they may be eligible for social welfare on the same terms as everyone else.
