Booked. *Now* I see the bad reviews! What to do?

As a hotel I thought I'd booked came back cancelled as it was in fact booked out, I hastily booked somewhere else through Laterooms.
I say hastily as only after I got the email through did I see the extra €85 cleaning charge and the €200 deposit on top of the price (it's an apartment in Barcelona rather than a hotel room). To be fair, these details are there, but hidden until you click 'More details' in the description and don't come up in the booking process.

So anyway, now I've seen some decidedly iffy reviews about the company, poor service, poor apartments, one about an apartment being robbed by burglars who must have had keys, people not getting their deposits back etc.

I tried cancelling 15 mins after I made the booking but was told by Laterooms that the provider wouldn't agree to cancel without charging 35%.

Obviously, I should have done more research & made sure I'd found all the terms. It might all be fine, but how can I best protect myself against getting ripped off?
I was sorely tempted to just cancel my credit card earlier so the booking wouldn't go through!

Cancelling the card wouldn't do a thing btw (the charge is valid, and the card company obliged to honour it, who in turn would place it on your account)

In a situation like this you will either a) have to take the hit and cancel or b) take the chance and grin and bear it. Bear in mind people are more likely to go online and complain than compliment.
