Hi, just looking for some advice on my situation. My partner is 28 weeks pregnant and only after starting maternity 1 week ago. But the shop she was a manager in has closed down and she has lost her job, will this affect her maternity benefit eg being cut off. she has been working the last 6 years until now so she has more than enough tax paid. Also does anyone know if she is entitled to rent allowance while she is on maternity? Thanks
Also we are together but i was made redundant myself and she was the bread winner in the house so this is why i asked about rent allowance.
    Cheers

If she is already in receipt of Maternity Benefit then she will continue to get it even though she has no job to return to. A person on Maternity Benefit is entitled to Rent Supplement, there may be a problem in that the rent you are paying could be above the maximum rent supplement limits for your area. The limits and rules can be found at http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/rent_supplement.html

Maternity benefit is calculated on the previous years tax history. It's worth bearing that in mind if you plan on more than one.

Maternity Benefit, the same as any other DSP "benefit", has absolutely nothing to do with tax. Its based on your PRSI contributions, several different recent years can be looked at to establish entitlement, actually it would be one of the easier Benefits to secure:)
OP your partner is entitled to her 26 weeks Maternity Benefit. She is entitled to statutory Redundancy. She is entitled to any holidays/public holidays she has not been paid for, if she does not have a job to go to after the 26 weeks she will be entitled to JSB. Best of luck.

If it comes out of my pocket without my say in the matter, it's a tax. USC is also a tax. So is the levy on waste disposal, insurance, etc.

My wife's last maternity benefit was based on her previous tax year. Her next maternity benefit will be based on this tax year. I can only speak from my own experience.

Yes, tax year ie the last years returns available to DSP. In other words the year before last. Your taxes go towards paying nurses doctors gaurds firemen etc.The Dept of Revenue collects taxes. DSP gets PRSI.
The PRSi paid by you and your employer on your behalf goes towards financially supporting those not in a position to financially support themselves ie people too old to work (pensioners) people too sick to work (illness benefit) those caring for family members or close friends (carers benefit) those who cant find a job (jobseekers benefit) or those unavailable for work because they are expecting or have recently had a baby ( maternity benefit).
Not a penny of any tax you or i paid went towards your wife's maternity benefit.

Yet it remains a tax. You even refer to it as such in your own post. Do you have an actual useful point,or would like to continue agreeing with me in an obnoxious manner?
