My 10 year old really likes minecraft but I have my reservations about allowing him access to it.. would it be safe for this age group? or is there an alternative?

Minecraft is a wonderful game for anyone of any age, but in a sense with regards to online play, sometimes you can get into a bad community with terrible mix of users.

Boards server and Tallon's server is full of people from age 10 to about 30 or so, there's always someone around if he needed help :)

Its very safe in terms of Gameplay and we have a good community who are always willing to help out new comers.

Are you talking about allowing your child play the single version or multiplayer

I have a similar question; my daughter (10) has started playing these last few weeks. I promised to get it for her after the summer, so she spent time over the summer looking at youtube tutorials (and is quite the expert now in what makes what). Lately, she's been asking about playing on a Hunger Games server (?) but I'm really reluctant to let her online.

Should I steer her away from that side of things until she's a little older, and just let her work on single-player mods etc? She's wise enough not to give out personal info (she's been on Club Penguin for years, but that's beginning to wear thin for her (and it is heavily monitored so I wasn't worried about her) whereas my impression of most other online games is that they'd be like the wild west in comparison.

I played Quake and Everquest online for years and never had any issues, but I guess a child's perception of and reactions to an online community would be different.

Here's the tl;dr version of my post:

Is online MineCraft suitable for a 10-year old and if so, what would be the best servers for younger / newbie players?

Apt username to comfort a concerned parent :p

I'm actually in the same boat, I've been putting it off for ages letting my son use it online. The other headache is he seems really interested in mods etc so I can see it being a nightmare getting him online using modded versions.

Does the online game allow mods, or is it only specific servers etc?

Only specific servers, i know boards had a tekkit server but i dont knwo if its still running or not. Thats the only mod server i know of.

Like the other lads have pointed out, the two main servers for people from Boards are Tallon's and the Boards.ie server. Tallon gets a lot of his users from his youtube channel and as for the Boards server, they are all members of this community.
Minecraft online is a great experience and you make a lot of friends out of it. Spend most of my time on minecraft on the Boards server. The age of users run from, I think the youngest is 8 (users younger sister), right up to 30.
I would look into a server and their site yourself before you let them on. But I guess that goes without saying.

Probably the safest you could think of.

I was playing CSS back when I was 10/11 and it was absolutely fine.

The only main issue would be any abusive members on some servers - best thing to do is check the server's website, and test the waters supervising your child and seeing if the other members are being polite and acting appropriately. The Boards server would definitely be one to go for though.
