Reeves's Pheasant (was - Can you I.D these birds?)

    my wife was driving through Moneystown near Roundood in Wicklow when these little fellas walked out in front of the car (u may need to zoom in). they look like young game birds but we cant id them. any ideas??

    Rather bizarrely they are Reeves's Pheasants, a species from the Himalayas. Adult males have a spectacularly long tail. I guess they escaped from somebody's collection rather than being released for hunting. Nice sighting!

    Wow! Thats a bit different! thanks for that! I knew Roundwood was high up but didnt think we'd see H:Dimalayan pheasants!

    just a further update on these. saw them again at weekend... with chicks! seems we now have a 'breeding population'. :)

    Some gun clubs have released Reeves in the past but have found the cocks can be quite aggressive and chase off the more common ringnecks. Interesting to hear that they are successfully breeding in the wild.

    Them ones look a bit too young to be breeding? They look like poults no?
