Fuel gauge problem

I bought a 2nd hand fuel gauge for my car from a car dismantling company 30 euro, arranged to have it fitted by a mechanic for 80 euro's quote given was 60 but he said he was more work than i though. So after paying out 110 the fault is still there.

I rang the dismantler who told me they will refund me the 30 euro, once i give them the gauge back.Problem here is I'll have to pay for the gauge to be taken out again.

Is there any point contacting the garage or will i be told tough you gave us a faulty part?

Is there any other things that could be the problem?

If i got someone to hook it up to a diagnostic machine would that be any help

    Its a 02 Vauxhal Zafira

It could also be the sender in the tank, or a bad connection anywhere in between.

The fuel gauge is part of the whole instrument cluster on the Zafira so you can't buy just a fuel gauge on its own.

Has the mechanic tested the function of the gauge with proper diagnostic tools at all do you know?

That's called a fuel level sender. What's the actual problem your having?

Completely wrong reading in dash for the petrol, i can read full with 20 euro petrol and after a mile it drops to red on the dash.

If i turn car off it goes back to full and same thing again.

I've all a kinds of readings even when its full after me filling it at pump, it drops to zero
    Thanks for helping:)

Well the gauge on the dash is electronic so if the mechanic has decent diagnostic equipment he can test that the gauge itself to see if its working correctly. If it is then it could well be a faulty connection/plug on the top of the tank. I've seen that on a couple of Zafira's.

So after spending 85 euro in a Opel dealer for a full diagnostic check.

They can find nothing with the car, but it still reads incorrect.

Advice from garage let it run out and fill it up to top again

That sounds more like a problem with the Cluster.

Sometimes the sender can get stuck but it gets stuck on 'full', so with a half empty tank it still shows as full.

Sometimes it can free itself up after a few full/empty cycles.

I tested a new set of dials on it gave same readings, so hopefully a few empty/fills will do it.

    thanks
