I hope this isn't in violation of the TOS. I just thought that I would share this with this group. I am not involved with this site (although I do know the man behind it's launch).

With all of the guitars being stolen lately, there is a new website to catalog and record your guitars online. It went live today.

    http://theguitarvaults.com

You can upload one guitar for free and then another you can upgrade for a minimal fee. You can get 20 guitars for £5 (I spent the fiver to upload all of the guitars in my house. I'm actually still in the process of cataloging them all.)

If a guitar/bass/instrument goes missing, you can report this on the site. The long term goal of the site is to protect musicians from people trying to re-sell/buy stolen instruments online/shops. Hopefully, it grows to the point where it can be used as such a resource.

At the very least, you should take advantage of uploading one guitar for free. Even if you don't join the site, hopefully this might motivate you to catalog the rest of your collection for your own records.

It looks like Guitar Player Magazine has picked up on the site.

I guess I should have asked for feedback in my original post. What do you think of a site like this ?

    My initial thoughts.. :)

I like the idea.. it's simple and relatively straight forward, which is good... but it's value depends on how many people use it, both from a buyers and sellers perspective... and on that it falls down (although in fairness to them it's early days)..

My primary issue with the site is advertising.. one minor one major.

Minor - If I have to pay for a site, then I don't expect every page to have adverts.. But if the site is critical to me, then I'll let it slide..

Major - Throw "Guitar Vault" into Google or Bing.. and plenty of sites are listed, but this site isn't.. It's absolutely no use me paying or registering on a site that noone know about or can't find. It is somewhat of a chicken and egg scenario.. but that's business. they need to find a way of making this the go-to site before I'll pay for it.. and that may mean making it free of charge for collections until enough folks are using it then introducing charges for services, advertising the backside out of it, connecting with shops to allow free registration of new guitars.. or whatever..

At present, I wouldnt pay for it, because noone knows about it.. So why bother spending the money. I can put up a post on here for free which is likely to be seen by a lot more guitarsist if one did get stolen..

I hope they make a success of it.. it could be useful if done correctly.. but as with most business's.. creating the web site is the easy part.. getting enough people to want to use it is where the problem lies..

Best of luck to them though...

I agree. Paying for a service that you can get for free elsewhere is not for me.

People should take detailed photos of their guitars and serial numbers in particular regardless.
