Glen of the Downs Golf Course

    Hi folks

Looking for some advice - I want to get my husband a golfing present for him and his brother somewhere near Dublin (his bro is returning to Ireland for the first time in nine years in October). They both play an odd time still, but have not played together since his brother emigrated. Unfortunately I know nothing about golf, and even less about golf courses.

Many courses seem to be members only from the few calls I have made. I have googled around and Glen of the Downs seems to have a reasonable reputation, so I was thinking of going for this. http://dublincard.ie/entertainment/round-of-golf-plus-lunch-for-two-people-for-%E2%82%AC60-instead-of-%E2%82%AC110

Is it worth it and what is this course like, or should I be looking elsewhere?

    Thanks

I know my dad has always enjoyed the glen of the downs course when he's played it. Charlesland in Greystones also allows visitors and is a good course with some challenges...

The price of the deal is very good. Might tell my mum actually as she's always looking for presents for my brother too :D

    Hi Mary,

Thats a good deal and Glen of the Downs is a well liked course ...... go for it at that price, but just check is there any restrictions (ie the playing time / days available could be limited).

    He's a lucky man ;)

Get on teetimes.ie you'll find plenty of cheap rounds. You'll find deals in Dublin no problem. What clubs did you ring that said members only I haven't heard of one club that's members only these days they're all struggling for members and green fees.

Glen of the downs is an enjoyable course. Have a look at druids glen or powerscourt we're in the winter season now so they'll all be doing similar deals some better courses for similar prices round of golf and a steak etc.

thanks guys! I think it was Bodenstown that told me members only last week, and another one I was looking at in Limerick was only open weekdays, weekends were members only unless you were staying in the hotel.

Powerscourt looks great actually too. Would people recommend this over Glen of the Downs or is it just down to the individual?

Powerscourts split into two courses east west beautiful courses very long though. I'd rather play there than Glen of the downs.

The upside is you could spend the afternoon in the Ritz spa might be worth giving the gift early and dropping a few hints :)

You had a lucky escape not being able to book golf in Bodenstown, it is the kip of all kips, stay well away!

How about Macreddin? I heard good things about it.

I'm not a fan of G.O.D. at all. It is fairly bland, no trees (do they describe it as an inland links or something), not particularly beautiful and quite exposed. I would not choose it above any of the other courses above. Apart from Bodenstown, which I am not familiar with.

Is Macreddin still operating as a golf club. I knew a couple of members who got shafted down there I was almost one of them.

Shame because it was a nice course. Haven't been down in a long time but last time I was there I just walked on and played with a member who was shafted.

I dont know to be honest, I just saw the thread and posted, I have heard very complimentary things about it, admittedly it was a good while back now. I think Powerscourt West Course is a lovely course, really good test of golf, some lovely holes & scenery. I believe greens can get a little over-slick in hot/dry/windy conditions....so no worries there :D

I havent played GOTD in a year or so, but the last time I played it was hard work. If you are missing fairways it was a lost ball 90% of the time as the rough was grown wild (knee length)
I dont think infrequent golfers would enjoy it to be honest.
They would be better with a more open, forgiving course I reckon.
    Nice present though.

    How were they shafted?

I've just checked their website and they're advertising membership at €800 and taking bookings for rounds online. A quick check shows next Saturday morning almost fully booked and Sunday also. Plenty of midweek slots available though.

    Sorry, my bad.

Regarding what you said about GOTD, my brother-in-law is a member there and makes exactly the same complaint about the rough. He says it makes playing the course an absolute chore in the summer and he just ends up hitting medium irons off the tee to avoid losing balls.

Regarding offers, I was in McGuirks a couple of months back and there was a stand at the door with 'Golfers Chequebooks' which had lots of vouchers for reduced green fees or stay and play deals in places like Glasson etc.

Also, a lot of hotels are doing special stay and play deals and since many of these are spa hotels, perhaps Mary could 'tag along' and have a nice weekend away as well. :)

The best courses in the area are Powerscourt, Druids Glen and Dun Laoghaire.

Glen of the Downs is ok but not in the same league.

Suggest you pick one of these and you will score big bonus points with hubby.

Powerscourt Golf Club is beside the Ritz Carlton and the famous House and Gardens but don't be conned into stopping at the kiosk on the drive. There they fleece the unwary for admission charges to the gardens or museum that you probably don't want to visit.

They are better courses, but they are also twice the price.
