Tracing an old family car

I am trying to trace an old family car. It is a 1983 VW Passat estate on old Leitrim plates, IIT. I have checked it out on mywheels.ie and it is not registered as a write off or scrapped. Its last NCT expired June 2000 and last motor tax expired September 1999. There have been 2 registered owners, it was sold to someone from the north Sligo area.

Is there anyway to trace the present whereabouts of this car? I practically grew up in the car, learnt to drive in it etc and as it becomes vintage next year I would be interested in tracking it down if it still exists.

NCT was not introduced until Jan 2000 and lasted 2 years, so I doubt it expired in June 00.
The fact it was last taxed in 1999 tells me that it was probably scrapped soon after that, the impending NCT gave many people the (in many cases unjustified)fear at the time and there was a pretty big cull of early to late 80s cars.
It doesn't have to show up on my wheels that it was scrapped, many cars of the era were never recorded as such. A certificate of destruction is a pretty new thing in Ireland!

Safesurfer, I live in the North Sligo area and will try to find out anything I can for you, if I knew the colour, full reg.no. etc. If you do'nt want to post details on here, you can pm me.

OP, on the strength of the info you pm'ed me, I got someone else working on the case as well. However he does'nt appear too optimistic.
But leave it with me another few days.

I like these kind of trails.
Would it not be a good idea to start with asking leitrim Co.Co for the name of the last registered owner. I think it unlikely that they give out info willy nilly but when you explain your quest ,they may help.
    then ring/write ask that person

That sounds the easiest route but unfortunately its not working out that way!
    But you never know ;)
I'll let ye know how I get on and then it's back to the OP

You're more likely to be successful with that approach if you explain the purposes of the query and supply them with a letter (envelope unsealed so that they can read the letter) to be sent to the last registered owner. In the letter the OP explains why he is chasing up the car and gives his contact details. It's then up to the last registered owner to take the next step.

That way the co. council won't be in breach of any data protection legislation and the owner's anonymity is preserved.
