I have a sony ericsson play. Lately whenever I try to download apps it says I don't have enough space. And this is when most things are on the memory card already.

I have read that I can free up space by deleting some original apps but this is done through rooting.

I dont know how this is done. I tried googling but its all complicated. Are there any step by step guide to how its done. Why can't you just delete the apps you dont want without all this hassle?

    check out this link:

this looks to be a flashing tool that will root your phone. I accept no responsibility for breaking your phone. Make sure to read all instructions correctly...

Once your rooted you can use Titanium Backup to remove whatever system apps you don't want.

because if you delete a wrong one you could wreck your phone, so by not giving you root rights you cant wreck your phone easily.
rooting voids warranty - pretty much for this reason.. because it allows you do exactly what you want in this case and you can wreck your phone. or you can free up space by deleting the right stuff..

goodluck anyway. its not all that complicated ever. its just it has to involve doing something or...above paragraph

So I have a rooting related question I'll tag on here

When you root and flash custom rom's - how do you know the rom's are not full of backdoors, spyware etc ? When you flash an original ROM how do you konw its not been altered?

As far as I know, rom files will have a md5 tag provided on the developers website, which acts like a signature. You can read that (with freeware) when you download the rom and compare them to know if its still legit... at least that's how I think it works!

Also, rooting has become extremely easy to do, in most cases its nearly a one click process. Its worth knowing that some roms (oxygen, cyanogen) have developed custom hboots that reassign the size of internal memory given to the system file, apps etc that free up how much space is allocated to apps. I did with a gingerbread oxygen rom and don't even need to partition my SD card, there's now 333mb for apps, compared to the 150mb the HTC desire provides as stock.

BE WARNED, MESSING WITH THE HBOOT / SYSTEM PARTITION CAN POTENTIALLY RENDER YOUR PHONE COMPLETELY USELESS. SERIOUSLY, TAKE GREAT CARE AND TRY TO RESEARCH AS MUCH AS YOU CAN BEFORE TAKING THIS STEP, IT IS NOT TO BE DONE LIGHTLY. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE. I can't reiterate that enough. Any advice I've seen implies devices can be salvaged if rooted wrong, but mess up the hboot partition and kiss it goodbye.

Its been a while since I did all this, so I'm pretty rusty on the process, as always Xda is the place to go! Its also pretty involved, requiring terminal commands and the like, so if that kind of stuff seems a bit daunting, its much easier to partition your SD card and go that route.

Fair enough with a lot of the system processes but there's no good reason that the stock ROM should include e.g. a FaceBook app that you can't delete to make space for something useful.

YeaH root it, unlock the bootloader, install CWM, and then flash a new ROM. Changing ROMS gets addictive though ha! I change mine at least once a week! By flashing a rom, you dont have to worry about uninstalling the wrong apps and wrecking your phone!
This looks like a great ROM! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23212672&postcount=222#

Like this poster here, I'd like to root my HTC Wildfire S as the space on it is a drag and I would like to remove some apps that came with it. Would anyone be willing to root it for me? No responsibility for bricking on your part. I'll carry all of the risk of that.

    Have a look here http://unrevoked.com/
with regards to removing apps,(I think) rooting the phone doesn't take them off your device, its just that when rooted you can then instal a rom which doesn't contain these apps. Also, have a look at partitioning your SD card if you're running out of space.

Thanks for the help. I have this finally done. I downloaded a thing that unlocks the bootloader to my computer. Connected the phone. And downloaded titanium backup. I deleted the games and apps i never use. A bit terriefied of deleting too much in case i feck it up. But it didn't free up much space. Only 45mb. So i now have 80mb. Its not alot.

Are there any anything else i can delete without breaking the phone. I think i read somewhere that the chinese keyboard can be deleted but not sure. Are there any hidden things that are safe to delete? Hope that makes sense.

Also is there anything else I need to do. I read about ROMs on this thread. What are ye talking about?

a ROM is just another version of the interface on the phone pretty much...
so it can change the settings menus etc.. the benefits of this is it removes all the crap or most of it, and just generally can be lower on space..
iv found them to be hit and miss and generally end up just preferring the original layout of the phone to be honest...
im sure xda forums will have a dedicated section for your phone if you check it

Yeah the ways I've seen roms is that they're like the operating system on your phone (I know its not a perfect analogy as they all run on android ... or windows, or os) , but basically they're generally a minimal version of android that will work on your phone (make sure the rom you boot is compatible with your device! ). They generally tend to have no on board apps (some contain the Google apps: mail, talk, maps). Then its up to yourself which you prefer really. Some HTC ones for example are based on the sense interface, others aren't.

I'm partial to gingerbread oxygen over cyanomod, for example. Its a great way of tweaking your device, I don't think gingerbread was ever released for the desire, but its even possible to get ics (minus a few functonalities) on the desire.

I just rooted for the first time there a few minutes and had a smoke after it lol

The nexus 7 was so easy to root, a child could do it

Now im hoping someone can advice me on what apps etc to get now since iv rooted please

meh its just things like juice defender etc can work better as they can limit your processor etc to save power when the extra oompf of modern phones processors isnt used.
titanium backup ofc is also very handy
