    Hi there!

Would it be possible to tell me what the servicing intervals are on the above model (2003 year)? Also I'd like to know if there's also the option of fixed/variable intervals like there are on the later models.

I'm planning on buying one of these in the near future and as I do a lot of miles a variable plan would be great.

Also - any recommendations as to where to get a timing belt/water pump change for one of these cars? Preferably in the Waterford/Cork areas.

    Thanks for helping.

There is a variable servicing option but buying a 10 year old Passat TDI and running it on long life service intervals is asking for trouble IMO.

If I were you I would change the oil and filter every 8-10k miles. You should be able to get an oil service done for about €75. €75 wouldn't go too far if you had a turbo or camshaft failure, for example.

Have to agree with George, 8-10k is a good base for servicing, that's what I do my own at, turbos are known to go on these cars so. Keeping good oil in it is important as a turbo replacement will set you back over a grand!

Timing belts can be done cheaply enough by Indy mechanics and to be fair some of the main dealers aren't that bad either! I got a timing belt for in my 05 passat for €390 in a main dealers earlier in the year which when you consider the whole front has to come off the car to do it isn't a bad price at all. Timing belt interval is 80k miles iirc.

Thank you for the advice. 8-10k miles is fantastic. Sure beats the 3,000 miles in my old car!

Around €400 isn't bad for the timing belt either. Would that include the water pump and tensioners?

You can get the timing belt job done cheaper than that. VW dealers have an offer on at the moment, €359 for any passenger car for timing belt kit and water pump. You should be able to find an independent garage to match or beat that price as well if you know where to look ;)
