Using a 9 Speed Mech with 8 speed shifters?

Rights lads.

I need to replace my rear mech.

I currently have an oldish 8 speed sora groupset.

I can only find 9 speed mechs online, found one on CRC for €12.79 so went ahead and ordered, was all LBS had as well and a fraction of the price.

Question, can I just hook a 9 speed mech up to an 8 speed setup (shifters, casette, chain etc) and set it up as normal or will I have any issues?

I think I read something on Sheldons site about mixing shifters and mechs, might be worth a look, although I believe it should, as the "logic" is in the shifters, so should be fine

CRC does have the 8 sp cassettes, they're just well hidden:

Works fine with Sora - I think it's the same thing actually. Nearly twice what I paid for it earlier in the year though

It was a 9 speed mech (derailluer) that I just bought.

That should be fine, no reason for problems to occur.
