Advice needed on Feed Troughs in Shed

    Folks

Thinking of putting feed troughs at back of shed. I have a 25-27" high wall at back using cavity block.

Have two options and want to ask ye which is better.

    1. Troughs on the wall so cattle dont have to reach out. Swinging door over the trough to open or close trough to the cattle for feeding.

    2. Troughs at back of shed so cattle have to reach out over cavity block width but easier to set up i would imagine. Swinging door to close off troughs as for option 1.

I want to go with the troughs at the back but am afraid that it would be too much of a reach for weanlings/ yearlings.
By the way, trough width is about 15" and depth is 5". Hanging troughs just altered for this use.

Question basically is what would the cattles reach be outwards (if at back of shed) and upwards (if on wall) and which would be most comfortable for them.

I'd be making them reach out just for the simple reason that if they are inside you'll be cleaning dung out of the trough every day.
It amazing how far they can stretch if there is some meal to be got. ;)

Agree better to have it outside, less hassle at each feeding for you too!

I'd say all but the smallest of weanlings will have no problem reaching out over a cavity block. The height to set it at I think is the key question. Others with such a set up will better answer that.

Have mine outside, built them when I was building the shed and recessed the water bowls into them too. Have a central hinge on the sheeting of each block, makes it easy to shut of neighbouring pens if amn't feeding all the cattle, will try stick up a few pics, measurements etc if I can. Only have them built with 6" block on the inside but it took a good coat of plaster so wouldnt be too far off a cavity and none of my cattle have any problems with it
They still manage to fill them with ****e all the time though as have to leave the shutters open to allow them at water, probably would change that if was doing it again but a few seconds with an ash shovel every morning cleans them out

Threw a quick eye on the walls of the shed. In and around 2 feet high outside maybe couple of more inches onto that inside.
