Rooting Vodafone Smart II (Alcatel v860)?

I've been Googling for a root guide for this phone but when following the instructions what's supposed to happen doesn't, or at least doesn't anymore.

    I tried following this:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722811

I have both files saved in the top level root dir of my SD card, and when I hold down power and +, releasing power when it vibrates but keeping volume + down it just offers to wipe my phone in different languages - nothing else, and when I try power with volume - it just freezes showing an android on the screen with a white background.

Correct me if I am wrong, the steps outlined in that guide are where I am to start rooting the phone yes? That is to say, has the guide author assumed I have something else installed already?

    Would appreciate any help.

I have downloaded VodafoneSmart2SU.zip and placed it in the root directory of my SD card, but when I power on the device holding the power button and volume up button, then releasing just the power button when the phone vibrates but keeping volume up pressed down all I get is a screen saying:
    All data will be lost,continue?

It is also in 5 other languages and there is a tick and X for confirm and cancel. I have tried proceeding but all that happens is my phone turns off and when I turn it back on it has been set to factory defaults, and all the other times I try it I press the home button and it powers off the phone.

From the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697302 I then downloaded Recovery.zip and Alcatel_FASTBOOT_Android_Sooner_Single_ADB_Interface.zip and placed them with VodafoneSmart2SU.zip in the root directory of my SD card.

I have since tried turning on the device by holding down (and keeping held down after vibrate) the power button and the volume down button for three or four minutes but the screen just displays the android logo on a white background and to power off I need to take out the battery.

I have tried the same but releasing the power button after vibrate and keeping volume held down but again the phone just freezes displaying the Android logo.

I even tried powering on by holding both buttons but releasing both when the device vibrates but the phone then just turns on normally, and also powering on holding volume up as I did initially in case I was supposed to.

The phone was purchased last week in the Republic of Ireland, it's running firmware version 2.3.7 and kernel version 2.6.35.7 TCL@50029-1 #1 build number 01016.

Can anyone help me with this?

Don't put the ADB Interface zip on your sd card. It's a driver for your computer so it can connect to the phone. Other than that I'm not sure.

You should ask over on Modaco. There isn't a forum for the Smart 2 but I'm sure if you asked in the Android general forum someone might know what to do.

    Thanks for that.

Posted there, and on the xda developers forum, now we play the waiting game!

    Hi

I have received some mail here on boards.ie and other forums asking if I ever managed to root my device. The answer is yes.

Successfully rooted using Uniflash 1.2 to access recovery when volume + and power on does not work.

Worked for me using this method, thanks to your recommendation.

I followed these guides to do so:

    http://developandroid.blogopogo.com/2012/07/15/set-up-a-vodafone-smart-2-alcatel-tcl-v860-for-android-development-with-eclipse-and-the-android-sdk-using-windows-7/

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859261

Anyone else trying this, beware before I completely it successfully the tool seemed to only work sometimes, then suddenly it worked without my changing anything. Good luck.

What he said, and it's all in the guides I linked although I thought I did not need the ADB drivers as I had some other driver installed that was allowing me to mount my phones SD card as mass storage device and transfer files - I did need the ADB driver installed to allow Uniflash 1.2 to detect my phone properly.

    1. Install ADB drivers if you have no already done, you can find them in the PC Drivers directory of your phone if you can access it, if not they are on the main Vodafone Smart II root thread on XDA Developers forum - I am unable to post there due to my low post count.

    2. Rename recovery.zip to update.zip and leave in the root dir of your SD card.

    3. Install Uniflash 1.2, I used that specific version.

    4. Connect phone to computer by cable and run Uniflash. Don't press anything on the main screen, it should detect the phone itself.

    5. Once it has been detected enter the flashing option and select 'Boot to recovery', I had to press this several times whenever I wanted to access it.

    6. Allow your phone power off and power back on by itself, don't press any buttons.

    7. Choose the option which is something like 'update from SD card' and select update.zip if asked but I am not sure if it will.

    8. You will get a message notifying you root access has been unlocked.

Note Uniflash at first did not detect my phone properly but after trying a few times it did.

I hope this can help somebody.

The link do download Uniflash seems to have been removed from the thread, and I could not find it googling although I do still have it on my computer so I could upload it somewhere if someone wants to recommend somewhere I can quickly upload it for anyone else reading this thread.

*On glancing through the XDA Developers thread someone did mention they suspect Uniflash bricked their phone so following the method I use is entirely at your own risk.

Last I checked there were two main threads for the Vodafone Smart II on the XDA Developers forum, they are easily found searching their forum but you might need to search for Alcatel v860 instead, the other name for our phone - it's probably worth reading every post in each thread before doing anything - although some of it is out of date which is why I had to use a different method than the OP of one of them advised.

That zip file contains Uniflash 1.2 and another 'files' dir that was in the dir Uniflash was stored in on on my hard drive.

I am not exactly sure what to do with the contents of the files dir because I did this back in September, but they should either be referenced in my quoted instructions or the guides I linked.

Interesting stuff here, but I'm not there quite yet. Uniflash won't work on my PC - perhaps it's a 64-bit problem, so I must try it on another machine.

There are useful videos at the below links - but again, so close but so far: I can get into recovery, but the home button won't work to select the option I need. It's a common problem but it seems the guy behind it has moved on to a fancier phone.

Afraid I haven't even tried - might be able to get my hands on another machine tomorrow.

Meanwhile, there's a little aggro going on over on the Vodafone forum, so maybe that'll encourage better firmware if other people who have this problem post. https://community.vodafone.ie/t5/Vodafone-Devices/vodafone-smart-2/m-p/83602/highlight/false#M2245

I'm also keeping an eye here for root/custom ROM news. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722811&page=62

No luck with Uniflash on a different machine, but that's probably not my problem. Getting the home button to work so I can say 'ok' when flashing the update is. All eyes on that megathread.

OK! Superb progress here, thanks to a fix posted today. Procedure:

1: Flash the newly-released recovery found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37778542&postcount=631

2: That should cure the dodgy 'home' key in recovery. So go and do this like we should have been able to all along. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LX7_Pn2j4g

So that roots it. It wasn't all that good for freeing up internal storage until I did a factory reset and rooted again. Onwards and upwards, folks.
