Difference between tyre brands?

Looking to get a new set of Tyres, just wondering how much longer a branded tyre will last compared to lesser ones and if there are any other factors that make them worthwhile? I was quoted 180 for a set of Kormorans (seem to be Michelins version of Tesco Value) and 280 for Firestones. Is it worth shelling out the extra ton?

    Size is 185/55R15

I think you could do better on both of those brands for similar money:

Here are a good budget brand:-
    Falken:

    Or mid range brands:-
    Uniroyal:

    Kumho:

    Hankook:

It may not be worth buying online as the exchange rate is strong and you have to add about €50/€60 to have them fitted and balanced locally but it does give a ball park figure of what you should be paying for them. Also you can review the different brands here:

Personally, I would recommend the Hakooks out of that lot, the father has them on his Auris and they are a grand tyre for the money.

They're bound to be ****e. Never heard of them, but they fall into your typical ditch find territory imo.

Forget anyone in these tyre places that says "Oh they're just cheap Michelins", they're 9/10 cheap chinese ditch finders.

The likes of khumo(spelling?), hancook, firestone and others mightn't be all that well known but they are very decent mid range tyres.

More expensive tyres do not last any longer than budget tyres (generally), but are better designed to give better performance. It depends on what type of car your driving and what your priorities are. If you drive a sports car then I recommend going for the better tyre. Also if you do a lot of driving at night especially coming into to winter, then the branded tyres will serve you best

Kormoran tyres are pretty good for a budget tyre. They are certainly far better than most other brands in the same price bracket. What car are they going on. Clio maybe? If so then they would do the job fine.

I would be more concerned about the other factors and although you want to get as long as possible out of them I would put stopping when you need to at top of list. If they are working they are wearing ! The differce in price between a cheaper budget tyre and a good branded or even mid range tyre would not be huge once you shop around.
