I need a new HD sat receiver but it occurred to me that different models may be better with ccam, ie less glitching and those of you with more than one model may have a view?

i only have db500s and a spider9000hd. both are so so.

A lot of it is how much money are you willing to spend on it?

I always thought that glitching came from outside the receiver, if you get my drift.

    Dm800 surely.

thanks all, and looked at dm800 but there is a new one now,DM800-HD-SE and does paying more get a better ccam? that dm is not cheap!! and then there are the clones!!

and yes I always thought it was out of the box but apparently may not be the case. I want hd so no use depending on the db500s. If dearer was better I would have a look so give me a clue.

if glitchy on bbc1 then its your signal. poor dish alignment or dodgy lnb or cable connector.

If glitchy on only the other type of channels then issue is outside your box. In both respects its not the box itself.

Any dm clone is good as the os that comes with it is miles better than a non dm box.

DM 800 clone is a grand box, have mine 2 years without any trouble at all

Its taking a chance though, isn't it? I have 2 clone DM 800s and I had to replace them with Vu plus boxes. They were just too buggy, something you don't really care about until you put them up against an original.

Regarding cccam, what problems are you having? As pointed out, its unlikely to be the cam. Did you try oscam?

dm800 clone works fine for me, as already said its outside "factors" that are the most important.

Yeah they're generally fine until the day that they're not. I went through 2 before switching to a VU+ Duo. Would never again go clone

Things break, this is life - Originals are very pricey imo, if I had it I'd pay for an original I suppose.

OSCam is an Open Source Conditional Access Module software, like ccam but apparently better. faster and more secure but to me so far quite complex.

Unless you're planning on some serious, eh, "Charing", there is no need for oscam, cccam will do everything you need and is pretty much plug and play. Save yourself the headache.

i have used the follwoing receivers for cccam

    opticum x703
    technomate 6902 amd 7102
    ariva 250
    amiko 8820
    amiko alien 2

the technomates are far too expsenive in my opinion
the ariva is crap for cccam
the alien2 uses oscam whic is suppsoed to be far more stable but i obly have the box a week so far too early to tell

so that leaves the opticum and amiko 8820 - both very capable boxes, solid and reliable. the optiucm goes for around €100 and the amiko 8820 for €120

i woudl have the amiko over the opticum becuase it can play divx files and also the remote is far better

theres a new vu+ duo out soon so going to wait....but might try that amiko??

Just be aware that if you go with the Amiko you will be very hamstrung in it's capabilities.
Yes its theoretically a great piece of hardware(The alien 2 at least, thats what I have experience of)
But it's software is buggy, and as its not a MIPS based processor the Enigma2 ports available for the box are all very buggy.
And given the lack of a decent E2 image its very hard to find any decent plugins outside of built in Spark portal and there isn't a great range of plugins there.
It does have good media playback capability though ;)

As for waiting for the new Vu+ Duo 2, have you taken a look at new Gigablue Quad?
I think its performance and price are going to be hard to beat...
If I could justify upgrading my duo I know what I'd be buying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,769 ✭✭✭swoofer

thats the problem, so many choices now. would you go for the gigablue quad? and have you seen the spec for the new duo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,599 ✭✭✭✭banie01

The GB Quad and the Duo 2 are both based around same MIPS 1.3ghz chipset and while the Duo2 has a much nicer display it will come at a substantially higher cost.
I've seen a consensus of @€;450 minimum for the Duo2(Supposedly it will drop into the Ultimo priceslot) with no price released as yet versus €399 for the Quad.
I wouldn't be too fussed about a mini-tv display on my sat-box, (and the Quads display is quite nice too)and built in Wi-fi wouldn't be a selling point for me because I prefer wired and have my setup arranged accordingly, I think the Gigablue offers a fantastic combination of similar performance with the added attraction of upto 4 internal tuners.
Specwise apart from the front display on the Duo2 the Gigablue wins for me on both Spec and value.
    Just my 2 cents.
If I could sell my own Duo I would buy the quad in a heartbeat.

Yes the Enigma is buggy but thats because as you pointed out - its not a MIPS processor - you will never have a true Enigma image for this box.

Spark is very stable and very usable. In fairness €195 for a triple tuner box will satisfy most peoples needs

have you seen the posts over on world of satellite re the quad, its shipping with the old kernel

I have a Blade Media 7000s. Very happy with it, great box and media player. 3D capable too.

You can download a plugin pack and install it in spark and this will give oscam, newcamd, and ccam, and more plugins. that how i did mine.
You can download the plugin pack from the satstation forum.
    I use oscam in spark.

Note OScam is a bit like a collection of other emulators like CCcam, newcamd etc. You can setup OSCam to be just like CCcam and only use CCcam settings (with slightly different config files setup as its a different program). OSCam includes all features of CCcam as a subset of its features and also includes many other features that you may never use. OSCam's monitoring web interface is excellent also. The card reader software for your local card in OSCam is better than CCcam also according to many. In fact OSCam is being actively developed daily so its generally perceived to be the the more stable solution at this point.
