So this is kinda a follow up to a previous thread i put up a few days ago. 5 days ago i was eating and one of my front teeth broke off. It had gone bad from decay. Had root canal treatment on it a long time ago and never went back to have it finished like a fool. As a result this is what happened. So went to the dentist and explained, thankfully she said it can be saved. She finished off the root canal and put a temporary filling in with the view to put a crown on a 2days after. Now even though i broke the tooth eating i had no pain in it, none at all. But after the dentist i was in agony. Have been ever since. Went back today to get the crown and she had to stop because i was in too much pain, even after local anastethic. So now she says the reason for the pain is bacteria, apparently it was ok when it had oxygen but after she closed the hole this caused the bacteria to form and hence the pain. To me it really feels like it is nerve pain but she says there is no nerve. So now im on antibiotics and am to back once i feel better. As i say it really does feel like nerve pain but hey what do I know..

So i guess what im asking is, does this sound normal? Also if it is bacteria how long before the antibiotics can clear it up so I can get my crown?

    Thanks for any info guys!

i went a dentist in england when i was young and another about 14 years ago and would you believe it similar things,
tooth apparently not cleaned out (or whatever they call it) adequately, refilled, pain (felt excruciating) assured there is no nerve (?) and then tooth out, too late to have it refilled , saved etc.........
my fear anyway is so bad i can't quantify it adequately to tell you and my trust levels are about the same
how could some be so cruel, so irresponsible, so unprofessional - it gives dentistry a bad name, dentists struggle enough to be visisted at all i should think and those fearful people will just end up with false teeth and so unhappy about it
    it is just not right
i do sympathise with you and so hope it turns out well - you are being so brave and exhibiting such fortitude - an example to us all

When did the pain begin? After the root canal, after the screw was inserted, only when doing the crown preparation??
Pain all the time or only with stimulus?? Is that pain with biting or tapping the tooth or pain with hot and cold things??

When the tooth broke off there was no pain, the pain began after my first visit to the dentist when she finished the root canal i had never got finished. The is no screw in there yet, still have not got crown.

Pain is constant, having to take allot of ibuprofen to keep it at bay.

The pain is constant but much worse pain when it is tapped or touched. No sensitivity to hot or cold.

    hello again
understand all will go well finally - i hope i have that right
    really delighted for you
and so sorry you have been through so much
surely every dentist in the country should be notified? perhaps they would all be understanding of people's deep fear and inability to go to the dentist?
i hope that there will be gas at least within easy reach of all SOON and we will be a smiling and proud nation, in that respect at least, once again

Previously asymptomatic teeth can flare up after the root canal procedure. This does not necessarily indicate that the procedure was done incorrectly- it can happen with endodontists but probably not as frequently...
Not having hot cold pain fits as the nerves and vessels are gone. Having pain on tapping and touching the tooth fits as it is the root and ligament that are causing your pain...

    Go see your dentist ASAP...

I did go back to see her to get my crown put on but she had to stop as i was in too much pain. So she sent me home with a course of dalacin antibiotics and i have to go back tuesday. So all this is normal? Well thats something.

So do antibiotics have a high success rate at clearing up these kind of things?

Will i be able to get my crown put on soon?

Thanks for your expert opinion, i really appreciate it.

Didnt say that it was normal, just that it is a known complication and can happen....
Antibiotics can help only if the root canal was perfect and cleaned, shaped and filled correctly, if the root canal was lacking then no, antibiotics will help for now but the problem may recur...

A crown should only be put on a completely asymptomatic tooth and a few days after a root canal is a little quick in my book, most would wait a few weeks/months to ensure success before fitting an expensive crown...

Btw, I am not an expert in endo....;)

Well you are expert enough to know what you are talking about :)

Well iv no way of knowing if she did a good job on the root canal, can only hope she did and that the antibiotics will clear up this mess.

I also had a abscess over the tooth, probably should have mentioned that. That's is now the area that is infected. I think she might of popped it while she was working on the tooth which could of aggravated it.

Really hope it clears up soon, im in agony, even with painkillers. Not to mention i still have no crown so am missing a front tooth.

You mean that you had an abscess before the root canal was done or now?

So now your chronic abscess is an acute one....
So your dentist did a one stage endo on an infected tooth and planned a post/screw and crown a few days later...
    Anyone else want to comment...

Pain associated with an abscess is due to the body's response to inflammation and a build up of pressure in the bone above the tooth. You had the first part of a root canal treatment done previously and should have gone back to have it completed in the recommended time frame, unfortunately you didn't so the infection is probably chronic and has been draining through the tooth so no pressure was building up. Now dentist has cleaned tooth and root filled it so the "release channel" is sealed up. The infection which has been there now needs to clear but this is not gauanteed.

Op if the tooth needs to be extracted, it will be due to the fact that the original infection was not resolved by having the root canal treatment completed in a timely fashion.
Rep Ipsa can give a more expert explanation as this is his field of expertise.

As for the comment above about gas, for gods sake gaseous treatment for the masses is from a bygone era, it is dangerous and un necessary.

So its possible the antibiotics will clear it up and i can get the crown? Or will more root canal work have to be done?

Also how serious is this problem, should I be worried?

    Thanks for your help

I'd root canal work done last year.....it took 3 weeks to get over what the fugh I'd spent the money on as the pain was beyond the point of reason.

My dentist, a seasoned lady soldier told me to stick with the plan otherwise if things didn't improve I was staring at extractions. She said flare ups are common and can last for weeks post work.....she was spot on.....one month later and since no probs.

    My 2c

You didnt get the root canal completed originally, this means the germs in the tooth can organise themselves into complex biofilms and suck nutrients from your bone & ligament. Sometimes these germs are like worms in your tummy happy to feed on you without your knowledge. When dentists upset the karma they can behave like a sleeping dog that has been kicked.
It would have been better with hindsight to have some medicine placed in the tooth for a 2-6 week period rather than having the root filling placed as a meet & treat.
I dont think antibiotics will fix the problem in anything but the short term.
Dont get an expensive post core crown done on a suspect root filling. Thats like building a mansion on sand.
Probably best to get the root filling removed, get some medicine in the tooth for 2-6 weeks, then get it re-root filled.
Ask your dentist is it worthwhile seeing an endodontist (root canal specialist) at this stage.
