It's a composite image.
Actual images from Mars are tweaked and changed to fill in gaps or blemishes or otherwise altered to make the 3-d image for that explore thing.
It's not meant to be any more than a fun little educational app.

So why did they alter the image in the conspiracy narrative? Why did they do it in such a way that any conspiracy theorist could so easily catch them out using the images they supply on their site? Why not just leave the offending sections blank and claim that there wasn't any good pictures of it?

In between the two areas marked "phyllosilicates" can be seen the offending items. They are not the same here.

"They" haven't changed anything. That programme is using composite images which are stitched together and made into a 3D model. It is not actual science images of mars which are easily available on the internet. Once again some moron on youtube reckons he's found proof that NASA is hiding the "troof". :rolleyes:
