Have you been able to narrow it down at all to a certain period of time?

What's the unusual first name? Did he/she die in Ireland, do you at least know that?

If you have a year of birth and a name then you can try putting those in to the search criteria on the BMD Index along with an estimate of the year of death. The online Index covers dates up to 1958.. I'd allow a few years either way for year of birth, as it's not always reported accurately.

You could also try online newspapers - e.g. IrishNewsArchives and Irish Times - these are subscription, but you can usually do a basic index search.

Try to narrow it down first.

Check to see if they are listed on either census. If yes, then the year of death is obviously later, so this narrows your search.

If you find them on the census, you know where they were living. A lot of people did not move very far, so once you find them on the census you may have the place of death. If so, visit the local graveyard/talk to local people.
