    Hi,

May sound like a stupid question, and maybe it is.

Do attic aerials like this require external power. I'd assume no as there is no signal amplification. I assume that I can just throw this up in the attic [aligned] and run a cable down through the ceiling to the STB / TV for Saorview?

    No.

Have that one in my attic and even splitting the signal didn't require amplification. So no power required.

As you have noted, that particular aerial is simply a passive device, so does not need a power supply. However, you would need to be in a strong signal area for it to work in your attic, as it doesn't have much gain.

For anyone looking at similar log periodics, some are sold with inbuilt amplifiers so there is room for confusion. These will usually come with their own separate power supply.

Id rather not have any powered appliances in my attic.

The typical remotely powered (separate PSU sends the power along the aerial cable) 'masthead' amplifier needs no more than 12 volts.

You might have a strong enough signal to feed 1 tv point from an attic aerial with no amplification, but you'll probably run into problems if you try to split the signal. The attic is the most convenient location for any kind of distribution amplifier, especially if all your cabling already feeds back there.
