Hi guys, I've just started first year and really think i've made a huge mistake with my course. I just hate it and don't think the career that follows or the work involves interests me in the slightest. I know myself that I want a different career in life and unfortunately I have enrolled in the incorrect course in University. I don't know if any of you have any experience with issues like this, but i'm just wondering if I do in fact decide to pull out after giving my course another week / 2 week trial, is there any chance at all I could receive even a small portion of the money I paid for the first semester in college? I know it seems ridiculous but I really think I chose something that wasn't correct for me and what I want in the future and i'm really suffering the consequences now! :(

I can't leave it much later to decide whether the course is right for me or whether i'm just finding it hard to adapt, as I will have to return to School and achieve an entry requirement to get into my course.

Thanks for any help in advance, I would really like to know the truth or whether i've just wasted a lot of my parents money! Thanks guys! :o

At one of the talks during orientation we were told that if you de registered by a certain date in October you would get your full registration fee back minus the €97 and still be entitled to free fees if you return to any other college in the future to pursue an undergraduate course. I'm afraid I can't remember the date in October but in sure if you go into the fees office or something during the week they will be able to help you. I hope that's some help to you :)

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear that your course isn't what you'd thought it would be. I'm also in 1st year, doing Law and Arts, and honestly the law and business classes are intimidating, mainly the vast amount of people in them. I find that we haven't really started into the course yet, there's been a hell of a lot of introduction. You could stay until Oct and see if it improves, with assignments/group work?
Perhaps make an appointment with the academic centre to go over options. Sometimes it's easier to transfer within a college to a course you like, although you said you would need a requirement. Have a sit in on the lectures of the course you think you may want to switch to and see how you find them.

Found this at this link: http://fees.nuim.ie/feesschedule.shtml

    NOTE FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013:
The Registration Fee of €2,347.00 (€97.00 Student Levy & €2,250.00 Student Contribution) is non-refundable, under any circumstances, to students who have de-registered after October 31st.

Good luck, hope you get everything sorted out.

Thanks guys, although ye both have been a great help I would really like to know whether I could receive any of my accommodation money back that I paid. I realise it's a tough question and i'm not sure if it's even possible myself so i'm not really expecting others to know! Thanks though!

    Hi Picture Frame,

I think you might be able to get the Accommodation money back, but probably not the deposit. Call into the residence office (On the left in the Student Services centre) and they should be able to tell you.

^ what plumpote said. You should be able to get the accom money back I'd say. Have a chat with academic advisory too (they're in Education House) and they'll help you sort out stuff for de-registering. If you drop out before October 31 you won't have to pay fees when starting your next course.

Hope you're okay PF! If you need any more help/info just ask.

Remember you can always do what I did and change discipline with a generic entry masters later on, if you can stick it out for the 3 years.

In either case, go to talk to Rose in academic advisory, she's deadleh and will have plenty of advice for ya.

Hi there, yes you will get accommodation money back, minus something (they'll keep a small bit for the electricity/heating you would have used) but you'll get most of it back!
