Parking near Croker

Have to drive a couple of oul fellas up on Sunday, one of them has to be put on the train in Heuston so we were thinking of parking around Summerhill. What's the story with "paying to look after the car".

I know we did it for years coming up from the country, paid 50p or a pound to a "minder" and never had an issue, but what's it like these days regarding safety and how much do these "minders" want usually these days?

I usually walk and bus to Croker but this Sunday is a bit different and for various reasons it's easier to drive the three lads as near to the pitch as possible.

The Hogan side off the Whitworth Road/Drumcondra road isn't suitable either this time, so it'll probably have to be the Summerhill area.

From listening to the young scrotes who do this, it seems to vary depending on how expensive your car is. A battered old fiesta will cost you €5 to have it not wrecked, but you'll pay €20 to keep your Merc pristine.

Park in the Irish life centre just off Abbey street. It's then a twenty minute walk to the ground. We've never had difficulty getting parking there on a match day, and you don't have to pay some scrote protection money for your car.

In fairness, I don't think you took any account of the point being made by the OP about needing to park close to the ground due to the ages of the people in the car with him.

We always park in the O'Connell's School car park (€10) right in the shadow of the stadium. I don't think it would be possible to park any closer and we end up paying for it afterwards with the length of time it takes to get out. Even by parking there, my father still complains about the distance he has to walk to get in. If I suggested parking in Abbey Street, I'd probably be asked why we don't just walk from Naas and be done with it! It may very well be the same with the OP.

Clonliffe College parking is usually €10 and right beside ground. But you would need to get there pretty early and there will be a huge delay getting out after game.

Be very careful with on street parking - the lads with the hats have been replaced with lads with High Vis jackets and nice shiny yellow clamps that will cost you about €130 to get off.

If your friends can't walk far and you want a quick getaway - park in one of the city centre parks like Irish Life or Parnell st and get a taxi. Or if it is an option drop them off and then find parking a bit away yourself.

Thanks for the advice, taxi it is so as I can leave the car nice and safe in Kilmainham.

The three of them wouldn't be the best on their feet and haven't been to Croke Park for a few years but as Mayo have a chance this year they aren't mssing it. We ended out in the Davin Lwr as I needed 4 tickets in a lower deck beside each other so that's why I wanted to park near Summerhill or the Nth Circular. I often travelled with them to matches all over the country when I was a kid so I'm kind of returning the favour here. Hope Mayo win after all this!:)

Best bet alwaysis to leave your car at one of the Luas Park n Rides and head in on the red line or else do the same with the DART and get off at Connolly

O'Connell School (behind the Davin Stand) is probably your best bet. Nice and safe and nice and handy. Might take you a few mins to get out but theres a handy exit at the back of the Davin Stand that brings you back around to the school after the match (cant go in that way) so its dead handy.
