hi people, hopefully you can help sort out my indecisive brain.

I'm looking to buy my first car here in Belfast. I have 2 years driving experience in the south on parents car, but it's time for my own.

I've been looking at £4-6k, hatchback, mostly short commutes with the occasional trip home on the motorway from belfast to kilkenny. I dont need a hhot hatch, but I've come from driving a 2008 Seat Leon 1.9tdi so I dont exactly want a blender engine either.

been looking at this 2007 VW Golf S 1.6 fsi. My question is, 64,000 miles on the clock... 100,000 kilometers. is that alot for a car like this? Can I expect the car to be reasonably reliable?

Go for it, decent reliable motor, 100000 km isnt bad at all, just keep the petrol in mind, i would look for a diesel, although the mpg isnt terrible, the whole VAG 1.6 engine isnt the best around, I just off loaded a 1.6 audi a4, broke my hear drinking juice and engine lights, given its a much more heavy car I would advise not to go German petrol

as the man says "Jap for petrol, German for diesel"

I would suggest a 1.4 civic ( http://cars.donedeal.co.uk/for-sale/cars/3812190 ) more reliable according to the mass majority

On a personal level, I would get a diesel vw, in fact I have a sportline passat on the way on monday :D

well my argument against diesel is:
i'll be doing small mileage, less than 5000 miles.
Most of my trips will be 5-10 minute spins. only doing a motorway trip once every 2 months.
    petrol is cheaper up here.
    petrol is quieter.

What kind of work should have been carried out on the car at this mileage? Timing belt, water pump?, anything else...

I havn't actually looked at the civics too much. not a bad car. i'll look around, cheers.

Great engine in these cars, that golf looks very nice indeed.

hmmm... do they have timing belts or timing chains...

Belt is due at that mileage/year would be about 300 pounds in walsh's belfast.

1.6 FSI has a chain, not a belt

.... which can give trouble. Those FSI engines are not always the most reliable, then again considering it's a modern VW engine, it's actually very reliable by their (very low) standards:)!

Went for a test drive and a kick of the tires, car looks like it's in great shape! I honestly struggled to find anything wrong with it along with two of my mates.

no floor mats, slight corrosion on battery terminals, slight scuffs on alloys. that was it. oh, and oil was a tad high... just serviced, cold engine...

Question though, and it's rather important I would imagine:

There was no manual in the glove box, no service/log book either. She (the dealer) is saying that it has a full volkswagen service history, but the original log book went missing with the previous owner. She does however have a record of servicings and intervals that she got from the VW dealer over the phone.

I found out that it was Edwin Mays that had done the servicing. I'm gonna call them up tomorrow and find out from them aswell. in the meantime, the woman at the dealership is going to get a new log book from them signed and stamped up.

is that normal and or trust worthy??!! (assuming VW verify the servicings?)

Assuming the dealer verifies the information then you have nothing to worry about. Service booklets can get lost, as long as the history of the car can still be verified then there is no reason for it to be a deal breaker.

Ask the other garage to send on the invoices for the work performed on the car too, if they genuinely did work on it they should have no problems telling you dates, mileage, work performed etc.

cheers, i'll ask them that so and find out 100%.

I'm just a bit nervous as this is my first car and I dont want to make any stupid mistakes. The most in way of a warranty that they'd offer with the car was 3 months. it was their policy seemingly. I suppose if it has had VW servicing like she said though, all should be well. car really does look like its in good nick. Cheers for help all :)

Congrats. I've a Passat with the same engine. 38.6mpg average since March and has seen over 43 on one tank at least

    Follow up questions though...

And I really hope I didnt just buy a lemon... (I may be being paranoid though.. feedback welcomee though)

Issue one. All papers signed n all, good to go, handing over of the keys... only one key. *eep*... didn't feel it was a deal breaker though. is this a bad thing? should I take precautions? I'm thinking I'm going to go get a steering wheel lock for it.

Issue two. I noticed just now (and I feel like a spa for not noticing sooner), but the stamp on the front RIGHT window is differnt from the three others in that it doesnt have a VW logo.

Also, there are shards of glass in the LEFT window sill in the rubber seal. wtf?! I looked around very very closely but didnt see any other marks.

Possibility -> Original owner loses key number two, key number one is locked in car. smashes window to get key?...

    opinions? pics below.

I've checked with one of those online sites for the £5 cost of it. showed nothin. clean history.

called vw garage aswell. they checked their records, only the full servicings with them.

could you ask dealer , why those shreds is there, what they may explain. obviously window was smashed, fitted aftermarket one .... not properly cleaned ... quick job, i believe there is more shreds. maybe nothing major... just smashed window, which may happen... something stolen from car, someone throw a stone .... also same lost key,....

see what dealer says ... but i think it is not deal breaker.... they might will drop price....

or you got car already ??

id say nothing to worry about.

hey Mar4ix, got the car already yep. I dont think it's that big of a deal actually now that i've thought about it. windows get broken, fair enough. Just the one key thing is a bit annoying. that's gonna be a bit of a nuiscance and expence to get a second key made up.

But anywho! this car is great craic! Absolute joy to drive! (i prefer it to the last car I was driving which was an 08 Seat Leon 1.9tdi) :D

in the words of father jack: " I'm a happy camper! " :pac:
