Not covered by the NBS - Can I buy a signal booster myself? If so, can you recommend?

Hi all. I'm considering different options to improve my internet. I am currently on 3 mobile broadband, which is terrible. The problem is, my house isn't covered by the NBS so 3 technically can't help me by offering a signal booster so I was thinking of just getting a signal booster myself. I don't know the first place to look to get one so would anyone know where I can get a signal booster? And if so, can you recommend one? Thanks.

They are for sale on the web, decent ones are €700+! You'd have to find one which works in Ireland as 3g has various different frequency bands worldwide. I think you'd have a problem finding a reputable supplier prepared to sell you an EU spec unit without their seeing your end user permissions first.

    2 major issues here:

1 Illegal to use in EU if not supplied by/ licensed to a telecom operator. A proper repeater acts as mini cell and the local 3 phones / data can lock onto it so its obvious to the world + telecom companies that you have the device. You could be on the receiving end of a criminal prosecution for 'interfering with telecommunications' if it screws up the regular network. I personally wouldn't go there..

2 The repeater has to lock onto the local mast to boost the signal. If there is no signal or other mast issue then it still won't work!

A better option would be to buy a 3g router which takes a dongle, mount the stick up high connected with a usb extension cord.
3 do a B260A wireless router box which takes the sim card itself. I have one mounted on a 20m pole in the garden in a waterproof box with an external aerial, conected to power and the LAN by ethernet. It works much better than the dongle on its own. The bandwidth is still slow but the stability , less drop outs etc, much better than before.

    Another option is satellite?

If you are not in the NBS area then try alternative suppliers? Even in Darkest Westmeath in the middle of the NBS area I find the box + pole + decent aerial pulls in a workable 02 signal.
