Maynooth to Mayo (Castlebar/Westport)

Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to get from Maynooth to Mayo (either Castlebar or Westport, or even Swinford) by public transport on Friday evenings and coming back in time for lectures Monday morning at 10. Don't finish lectures til 5 on Friday. I've checked the buseireann site but does anyone know of any private operators or has anyone discovered a faster way?
    Thanks!

Train to westport from Heuston would be the quickest. I think there's an early one that gets you back up in Dub for 9ish...

Yup, train is the best bet, there's student deals for intercity fares on irishrail aswell, I know it's 20 euro return to Sligo so might be something the same for Mayo:)

Well I know that there's a guy who drops people off in Charlestown, Swinford, and somewhere else. He leaves at the NUI at 3:45 on fridays and leaves Swinford on Sundays at around six. It's also 30 euro return. I could get you his number if you wanted.

Also, I'm from Swinford but I get the Maynooth-Sligo train. It's 20 euro with student discount and mammy doesn't mind pickin me up :)

Had a big long post written imparting all of my public transport knowledge that is now negated by the fact that there's a new timetable coming into effect as of October 7, boourns although yay for no more 6 hour long ridiculous gap between buses! Oh, and the Castlebar buses take hours so your best bet would be jumping off a 22 bus in Swinford and getting collected if that's a possibility. Bus Eireann is also cheaper than private operators AFAIK and cheaper again if bought online. They also have been known to throw up €10 return journeys online during the year which is awesome.
