Safely Hitching Round Germany

Im off to Germany for a week and will for the very first time attempt to couch surf. I was reliable informed that a similar practise exists for safely getting lifts around Germany. You join a hitchhiking website, register and get lifts to places paying half for fuel. After the journey you rate the driver and they rate you.

Does anyone know a site I can visit to do this?

When I googled germany hitchiking it came up in the first page, so maybe try that yourself?

    actually, .......
what you need to google for is mitfahrzentrale and the first few links are the main ones to check out.

actually thumbing a lift just doesnt happen.
Probably as much to do with the fact that you cannot thumb a lift on the motorway as much as anything else

Is there a hint of sarcasm in this or are you just being pragmatic? I initially did google the idea and having no luck posted on Boards for further enlightenment, is that not the raison d'etre of Boards?

Anyway I'll assume you were being helpful rather than snippy and thank you for the suggestion but I have not had much luck using google to solve this pickle.

http://www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de/ is the site, it's car sharing and the lifts well you usually throw the driver a few quid agreed amount in advance!
