Might be time to change car?

Hope the community can help me here.

I had my car in for NCT today and it failed BIG time. Its a BMW 03 1.6i model (1.8l engine). It failed on the emissions (new sensor needed to fix that) break pads need changing both at the back, 1 tyre is just about over the min limit, hand break failed pass is 16% mine was 15% the list goes on. He did start off with well your lights passed which I thought was funny after he finished going through the list of failures.

So I was thinking of changing cars before this and this has sort of got me looking at newer cars.

I drive an avg of 37km to 50km per day. Thinking of switching to diesel engine 1.4l to 1.6l. Am I doing enough miles to justify getting a diesel engine ? My main issue is the cost of petrol I have to put into it to keep it running. Or am I just better off getting the car fixed up and back in for the NCT ?

Any advise would be great. Not sure about budget yet but dont want to spend to much i.e. nothing over €15,000

    Thanks all
    Neon

I realise this isn't a spelling forum but why do people seemingly constantly spell "brake" as "break"?

p.s. Might not be too pricey to fix your BMW OP. I doubt your mileage justifies a diesel, and switching to one will be costly.

If you average the mileage at 40 km a day multiply it by 365 your very rough annual mileage is less than 15k km a year. Which is very low for diesel. However if you are insistent on buying a diesel avoid ones with dpf as this will increase the reliability of the car. Really if you could find an efficient petrol engine it would do the job buy a cheaper petrol car As they can be bought very cheap now and but the savings towards extra petrol. You would buy a really nice petrol car for 10k euro or less. I'm big in to diesels but if that's all the mileage you do unless you plan on doing long trips at the weekend I would probably stick with petrol. Hope this helps.

None of those things sound particularly serious to me - is there anything major that you haven't mentioned? If not then I can't see any reason to change cars over it.

€15k should cover those little jobs for the NCT.

Is this the perfect example of "fix it when the NCT says its broken" motoring?

Preventative maintenance OP. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Brake pads and tyres are just normal routine items you will have them on any car. The sensor and handbrake can also be fixed by any decent independent mechanic for a decent price. If that's all that's wrong then I'd get it fixed and run it into the ground.

It's not worth a huge amount as it is already. I'd fix it and keep it going if it were me. A diesel wouldn't make sense for you OP.

The above is all irrelevant if you just want a new car though.

Thanks all for the replies and spelling check.

My main gripe with the car is that it drinks petrol being a 1.8L. Otherwise it is fine although it needs some work done on it.

Best thing is to get it all priced up for the work that needs doing and then take it from there.

You'll find it will be drinking much less when you get your lamda sensor changed...

Fix the thing - if you stick it on donedeal, someone else will buy it for a song and fix it cheaply and drive it for years and years. Just bleedin fix it and drive on. Or don't, and sell it.
