I'm looking to get a remote start set up on my 05 Cayenne. Does anyone know
    a) if this is possible
    b) if this is expensive
    c) anyone who can install such a system?

I don't particularly want to replace the existing alarm system if possible, but would that be necessary?

There appear to be some very inexpensive options available. Would these do the trick? Any tips / advice welcome.

    is it automatic?
you'd have to bypass the immobiliser also.
    in fact

youd be asking for it to get robbed but each to there own!

    Yes, automatic.

Do you mean the immobiliser would be need to be disabled always or just when it's being started remotely? It would only be remotely started in a driveway behind closed gates out of view of the public.

A car won't start unless key and immobiliser in ignition barrel are paired so you'd either have to remove the immobiliser or leave a second key in the region of the immobiliser all the time.

most people take the spare key apart and tape it to the inside of the steering wheel cowl or somewhere near the ignition.
the rest is easy if you have any idea about car electrics,

Some aftermarket alarms support it too.
so you fit the alarm and just use the starter function.

OK, that might be the way to go. Have you any recommendations on where to go in Dublin to get this done? Or should I just take a random car alarm guy from the golden pages?

I can't imagine any insurance company being too happy about that.

OP, I'm curious to know what scenarios a remote start would be useful for?

I can see the benefit of cutting the ignition remotely (if you were car jacked etc.), but not starting it remotely.

So you can have the car started and warming up whilst Tarquin and Victoriana don't have to slum it in a cold car before being brought to school?

Well, it's not that lonely as I'm right up there with him. Lying on to the insurance company invalidates the policy therefore anyone doing so is uninsured which is everyone's business.

Use your head. It won't hurt the insurance company at all, but it might hurt the OP.

just set the heating timer for this!

OP, remote start is bad for 2 reasons:
1 - security (as mentioned above, your car will be easier to steal and you may have insurance issues)
2 - it encourages people to drive their car faster, before all components have been lubricated properly. just because the engine is up to temp, doesnt mean everything else is.

A lot of(if not all) emergency vehicles have a function installed whereby when enabled, the key can be removed from the ignition but the engine remains ticking over(so lights etc. don't drain the battery). If someone jumped in and tried to drive off, the vehicle would cut out pretty quickly as it realises the key hasn't been reentered. Would something like that be legal for the OP?

You're giving the OP poor advice.

They ask whether the car has been modified.

    Clifford Alarms offer the option

Main reason for wanting this is to warm the car up in the morning. It was damn near 6°C this morning. What am I, an Inuit?

A pre-heater would avoid the security compromises (& any insurance issues), but would probably also cost more.
