Anyone see this?? Very sneaky, hidden away in the "60" road works zone near swords exit. To top it off the van was unmarked and front facing

Given it was unmarked, in the middle of roadworks, and facing the wrong way, could it not have been a work van?

Doing people for speeding through roadworks on a live motorway is fine by me. Workers are separated sometimes only by a set of cones and the greatest safety equipment is a hi-vis jacket.

I'm generally against speed traps but agree with that one.

Considering they give you fair warning with the BIG flashing signs saying the speed limit WILL be enforced.

Yes it is like shooting fish in barrel seen as so many people insist on ignoring the limit through the road works and therefore becoming said FISH to be shot.

I think it's the stealth factor he's posting about, not the location.

The van might be hard to spot. The signs telling you the speed limit and that they will be enforcing said speed limit, are not.

As far as I remember, if your caught speeding through roadworks in the UK, the points are doubled! This is a bit extreme (caught doing 61 in 60 twice and your banned off the road), but doubling or triple the fine amount wouldn't be a bad idea.

Fair enough but we all know signs aren't much of a deterrent to speeding. Should these van's be marked or unmarked is the first question. Second question is should they be able to hide their vans on the side of the road. That's what I took from the original post anyway.

I wonder what the legality of those temporary road signs are ?
Would it be similar to temporary roadworks traffic lights which a Garda friend once told me were unenforcable ?

I'm getting very tired reading this "shooting fish in a barrel" idiom that people keep on spouting when the Gardai or GATSO vans are out doing speed checks.

its really a tired out defence

Meh. Make a few quid off people that are seemingly happy to pay it so.

In Queensland they have patrol cars permanently sited at roadworks locations. I think this originated from a serious accident at a works site. Enforcement at work sites in this country are non-existent. This has to be welcome, just a pity we're conditioned not to expect it, it should be the other way around.

I couldn't believe when I passed there recently and no one slowed down for the road works, I was the only one doing just over 60, yes I know it feels like you are crawling along when doing 60 on a motorway and it killed me but everyone else was flying by. I just assumed there were speed cameras posted somewhere so didnt bother driving over the limit. I ws thinking does everyone know something here that I dont.

I remember trying to stick to 60 there. Was so tempting to speed up as every on else was flying by and I didn't feel too safe as cars were coming up fast behind me.

I would agree, but then again I drove by there today and saw only a handful of people working. I did the speed limit there today and got passed by trucks and buses. Surely that's more likely to cause an accident???

Got my ticket too. 74km in 60km zone  At 11.36pm too. No road works happening at that time of night :(

van was on the northbound lane at 11 wensday morning.
i might be more inclined to keep at 60 if the roadworks didnt get done at a snails pace with around 10 people on the job. i worked on civils before and siac are probably going so slow coz they've sod all on when its finished

It's a dreadfully slow upgrade to complete it seems to me.

    When did this upgrade start?

Do you reckon it's anything to do with the re doing of the donabate junction, i.e. they don't want 3 lanes all the way up to queue's to get off the motorway and they want the 2 projects to be completed around the same time?

Sorry to resurrect - I found this thread while googling for "when are M1 roadworks scheduled to finish".

I got 2 pen points on this stretch of road back in September, and since then have been keeping to the 60kph limit during my daily commute. But I feel I am more of a danger now than when I was caught doing 75kph! I have buses, bin lorries, articulated trucks trying to overtake me.

There are speed camera signs up, but human nature being as it is, if drivers do not think they will get caught then they will drive at what "feels" like a safe speed for them. And as I watch the cars speed by me, I think that is about 100kph on average.

If a limit like 60kph is going to be imposed on a dual carriageway like this, and maybe it does for the sake of construction traffic entering/exiting site works, then it should be enforced more. Putting a van there once every 3 months is not enforcement, especially if it is hidden away.

welcome to the new public-private partnership Irish model (endorsed by Angela) for building roads in Ireland.

You set up a ridiculously low and dangerous speed limit on a motorway, and the fines pay for the roadworks.

From time to time the roadworks have to pause, until more fines have been paid.

It's ****ing terrifying! It's the same on the N4 before mullingar. I'm kinda halfway between "I'm not getting 2 points and an €80 fine because someone wants to go faster" and "Is not getting 2 points and an €80 fine worth the risk of getting creamed by an artic who didn't expect someone to be obeying the limit?"

I agree with ya, either leave the camera there permanently and signpost the **** out of it to ensure reasonable compliance (which would at least try to show that's not an cynical revenue generator) or maybe raise the limit to 80 in certain sections outside of working hours.
