So, found a car key a Christchurch this morning while stopped on my bike at the lights. It's a VW key with the dealers name and an ID tag. Rang the dealer - the tag is a chassis number apprarently. Dealer says handiest is to return the key to them and they'll use a key reader (if it's a post 2008 car) to try an reunite it with it's owner. A waste of time, or hand it to a local Garda station?

If the chassis number is still on the tag then I would assume it is pretty new?
I would go with handing it to the dealer.

Maybe vw Ireland would be better.

Ok, thanks for the replies lads. Maybe back to the dealer is the better option - it's a well known main dealer in north Co. Dublin.

Out of interest, would VW have records of who bought what car? Address / phone etc? Or would they just scan it and get a registration number (if that's possible??)

Good to see someone actually making an effort.

My missus lost a Renault key card in B&Q a couple of years ago. I asked about it once a month or so for about a year at customer service. Never showed up. Can only assume someone found it and took it or either B&q never clean their store, or they do and the guy just went "meh" and chucked it in the bin.

If it is the chassis number then a search on PULSE would get the current owner in case it has been sold on since new. Garda station IMO.

Yeah. They issue recalls from their records iirc. Problem is, someone sells their car and the new owners details are not updated with the garage or manufacturers so the subsequent owners dotn get the letters.

Would it be anything to do with this person I wonder??

No, not that one. Turns out Garda Station was the way to go. Key on the way to its rightful owner this evening. Boards never ceases to amaze me.....

i found a Toyota key in Ranelagh last year. Dropped into Donnybrook Garda station- cop at reception took out a big cardboard box full of keys (houses, cars, whatever) and told me 'throw it in there, someone might come looking for it. Thanks for calling in'.
Glad that some stations are better than others for following up this kinda thing...

What exactly did you expect the guard to do in your case?

Not much more than this can be done normally if it's just a key.

This VW key had a chassis number which was used to identify the vehicle and in turn the owner.

EDIT-There was a tag with the chassis number as opposed to it being ON the key I believe.

The Toyota key, if it has the metal code tag still on the ring is the code for the blade, It's only a short code, so you could have loads of different cars that would match.
