Wired Internet apartment block ++ router

    Hi
Just moved in to an appartment block and the internet that comes with the apartment is for connection through LAC in the wall.

Now it needs a static ip to work it and I have that set up. And it works.

But we badly need wifi. The last apartment block I was in all i did was connected the router to the wall and hi presto it worked.
So I connected this router to the wall and set up the ip address for the router but nothing.

How do I set up a router on a static ip address ?? :)

Ad hoc isnt really an option either. Because it means one laptop always has to be in the apartment.

    Any ideas

    Cheers Ronan

set up one of the ports on the router with the static IP address. I presume it has a lan port assigned to WAN

then make your router issue DHCP on another subnet and create wireless.

basically treating the connection coming into your apartment as a broabband circuit and using the router as normal

    Cheers Matt

Can I have that with a little less jargon mate my networking skills arent great

    Do I

    1. Connect the routers modem port to the wall
    2. Connect one of the wired sockets to the pc.
    3. Change the properties on the LAC adapter on the pc.

Because that doesn't seam to work ?

    OK.

yeah connect your router's modem port to the LAC connector.

Connect your PC to the router.
Log into the router's settings page (likely to be http://192.168.2.1)
Change the modem port ip address to the static address you spoke about earlier (just make sure its not similar to the belkin routers address, if it is you will need to change the DHCP scope on your router and its IP address too.).

In theory then your router should just start working which can be tested by browsing the web on the PC thats connected directly to it.

For some reason I'm not getting internet over the wire when I connect it through the router.

The internet will only connect when I have it directly connected to the wall.
So I cant get on to the 192.168.2.1 page

    hmm?

When you plug into the router on your computer click the start button and type cmd

    Then press enter

When the black screen comes up type in ipconfig
    Press enter.

Post up the result it gives for your default gateway

That looks like you're getting an intent address?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Firblog

Have you been given a static ip address and gateway that you must use?

    87.192.250.236
    255.255.255.128
    87.192.250.129 ?? Yes?

Can you post the model of the router you have, need to know if your router is suitable for the type of setup
