    Hi,

On my wifes 2008 BMW 118D the feature where the engine cuts out at traffic lights appears to have stopped working.

Anyone any ideas as to the cause.

    Cheers

Most likely the battery. If its not charging fully, the stop start doesn't activate.
Other factors would be aircon usage, outside temp, and short trips

Great, start stop is a total pain...
Probably the colder mornings and the engine has not got up to operating temperature... Is she doing short trips??

Is it not working all the time or is it intermittant?

The engine has to be operating at a minimum temperature for the stop/start system to work which means the engine has to be running for a certain length of time before it will work. Outside temperature also needs to be min +7c. There is also a button on the dash to switch the system off but you have to switch it off everytime you put the key in the ignition as it is set to on by default.

emmm.... at the risk of being offensive, have you looked in that little-read publication called the "Driver's Handbook"? It's all in there: battery condition, temperature, air-con etc. In fairness it has to be said that the BMW handbook is one of the most useless on the market, but read it anyway,

It must be the battery as it does not cut out even after long runs over 200KM with a lot of motorway driving.

Seems the efficient dynamics stop/start won’t operate when AC fan speed is over 50%. Is the heating or AC in use more recently? Try putting AC on auto or off (if it’s on) to see if that makes any difference. Otherwise could be the battery as suggested.
