The time has come once again to change tyres

3 tyres are up for change on my ford focus zetec

The particular tyres in question are 205/50 r17

Has anyone any recommendations firstly on what tyres to go for

And secondly has anyone any recommendations where to get these tyres at the best price be it on-line or in the Galway area

I'm guessing that size are going on a Volvo S40\V50 or Ford Focus? Not an overly common size when I was replacing them on my old S40.

These are what I would recommend:

    Falken:

    Kumho:

    Uniroyal:

    Hankook:

All good mid range tyres or if you want a premium brand then you have the more expensive:

    Continental:

Check on prices for these with local tyre centres as the exchange rate is strong and you have to allow about an extra €60 on top of online prices for having them fitted and balanced.

I paid €135 each for Vredestein Ultrac Cento in that same size fitted and balanced if that gives you a reference point.

I bought 2 and they are on the rear of an e46 320d, I dont drive overly fast most of the time but they seem very good, better than the Bridgestone Potenza RE040 that were on the rear in my opinion as the traction control kicks in less than before when you need to take off from a stop quickly, as in pulling out of a busy junction etc.

I have that cursed size on my Volvo s40 1.8 petrol.

I recently put 2 Bridgestone Turanzas t001s on the back and I have to say I'm happy with the performance. Better than the Continentals that they replaced, though they were in the yellow zone to be sure. I have turanza er300 on the front. When that set goes I'll be adding more t001s.

The only problem is the rather horrible price of 180/corner. I'd to save up for 2 tyres as I would a service.

    Edit: I should add
The Turanza ER300 on the front are 23,000km old and still in really good nick.

I replaced the Continentals (ContiSport I'm pretty sure they were) with t001s 37,000km after I bought the car, and the service book indicates (oddly - I've never seen tyres mentioned in a service book before) that they went on 9,000km before I bought the car. That was 46,000km which was some lifetime - and I don't let tyres go bald though I'd have changed them 1,000km before under normal financial circumstances as they'd just hit the yellow zone. Now, I mostly do motorway driving and N road driving as I've a nice commute and drive up and down between Cork and Dublin a lot, but I'm still impressed with the lifetime of the Continentals.

Previously, I had a Ford Focus 1.4 which went through the mid-range tyres I bought (Kumhos, Firestone), in 30,000km.
